From 1968 onwards, the maximum displacement for the prototypes was limited to 3.0 liters and this regulation change made the Ferraris and Fords used the previous year, obsolete. This led Alpine to build a car with a 3-liter engine capable of fighting for overall victory. The Gordini engine most used at Le Mans by the Alpine was the 1.5-liter 4-cylinder. Using two 1.5-liter 4-cylinder heads coupled to a new crankcase, Gordini created a V8 engine with a displacement of just under 3 liters. The result was a very conventional engine with a double timing chain. The power supply was initially entrusted to four Weber carburetors, but was later also tested as an injection system. The carburettor engine's power was 310hp, and with the injection system, along with a higher compression ratio the engine could develop around 350hp. The gearbox was a five-speed German ZF. Alpine built a trellis frame of steel pipes for the new V8. The suspensions had transverse arms with coaxial coil springs on the 4 wheels. The new car shared the body design with the A210 model.

Dal 1968 in avanti, la cilindrata massima per i prototipi fu limitata a 3.0 litri e questo cambio di regolamento rese obsolete le Ferrari e le Ford utilizzate l’anno precedente. Questo portò la Alpine a costruire una vettura con motore da 3 litri in grado di lottare per la vittoria assoluta. Il motore Gordini più utilizzato a le Mans dalle Alpine era il 4 cilindri da 1,5 litri. Utilizzando due testate del 4 cilindri da 1,5 litri accoppiate a un nuovo basamento, Gordini creò un motore V8 con una cilindrata di poco al di sotto dei 3 litri. Il risultato fu un motore molto convenzionale, con doppia catena di distribuzione. L’alimentazione fu inizialmente affidata a quattro carburatori Weber, ma in seguito fu anche testato sistema ad iniezione. La potenza del motore a carburatori era di 310Cv, e con il sistema ad iniezione, insieme ad un rapporto di compressione più elevato il motore poteva sviluppare circa 350 Cv. Il cambio era un cinque marce della tedesca ZF. La Alpine costruì un telaio a traliccio di tubi in acciaio per il nuovo V8. Le sospensioni erano a bracci trasversali con molle elicoidali coassiali sulle 4 ruote. La nuova vettura condivideva il design della carrozzeria con il modello A210.

The debut of the A220 took place at the Le Mans 24-hour test in April 1968 in the hands of Mauro Bianchi, then he took part in the 1000km of Monza and the 1000km of the Nurburgring where he did not start for the race due to a catastrophic accident happened to Henri Grandsire. Later, four cars were entered in the Le Mans 24 Hours, but only one managed to finish the race. Although the A220 design was further developed in 1969, there were no appreciable results and on several occasions the Alpine A220 proved to be poorly powerful and unreliable due to technical failures. The sports program of the firm was suspended at the end of 1969.

Il debutto della A220 avvenne ai test della 24 ore di Le Mans nell'aprile del 1968 nelle mani di Mauro Bianchi, poi partecipò alla 1000Km di Monza e alla 1000 Km del Nurburgring dove non partì per la gara a causa di un incidente catastrofico accaduto a Henri Grandsire. In seguito, quattro auto furono iscritte alla 24 ore di Le Mans, ma solo una riuscì a finire la gara. Sebbene nel 1969 il design A220 fosse ulteriormente sviluppato, non c'erano risultati apprezzabili e in diverse occasioni l' Alpine A220 si dimostrò scarsamente potente e inaffidabile a causa di guasti tecnici. The chassis #1736 is one of the new cars built for the 1969 season with tail-mounted radiators, the low rear engine hood and the low central wing between the fins that forms a tunnel between the wing itself and the rear hood. For the first time it was seen at official tests at Le Mans led by Mauro Bianchi in 3'41 ". Then ran the 1000 km of Spa where Jean-Claude Andruet and Gijs van Lennep finished in 21st place after starting seventeenth. At Le Mans the cars was driven by Patrick Depailler and Jean-Pierre Jabouille: on the first lap Jabouille had to cross a wall of flames, caused by the incident of John Wolfe, who burned the car, forcing him to stop alongside the track to use the fire extinguisher. Then they started a series of problems, oil leaks, gasket changes, pit stops, and finally the breaking of a connecting rod caused their withdrawal, the car did not run anymore in its time, and has recently been brought back into races by his owner.

Poi iniziarono una serie di problemi, perdite di olio, cambi di guarnizione, soste ai box, e infine la rottura di una biella ne causò il ritiro. La vettura non corse più nella sua epoca, e recentemente è stata riportata in attività dal suo proprietario

Two very well-made books with many descriptions, interviews with leading protagonists, "behind the scenes" stories, enriched by many beautiful pictures. An excellent research effort which is absolutely essential to know the history of the fascinating Alpine prototypes. In English, for fans, two books are absolutely recommended.

Due bei libri molto ben realizzati con molte descrizioni, interviste ai principali protagonisti, aneddoti da “dietro le quinte”, arricchito in oltre da molte belle fotografie. Un eccellente lavoro di ricerca assolutamente indispensabile per conoscere la storia degli affascinanti prototipi Alpine. In lingua inglese, per gli appassionati sono due libri assolutamente consigliati.
