In 1966 the British driver Roger Nathan and the aerodynamic engineer Frank Costin, collaborated to build a racing car with closed body, powered by a Hillman Imp engine. The Costin-Nathan GT car combines a very aerodynamic shape with an unusual monocoque frame in plywood. The car with unconventional design got a fairly successful driven by Roger Nathan himself. In 1969, Nathan began to develop an open version of the existing car design, Frank Costin had already left the company, so the name Costin-Nathan was abandoned. The new car, originally equipped with a Coventry-Climax FPF engine and later with a Cosworth FVA, was named Astra RNR1 where RNR indicated "Roger Nathan Racing". The RNR1 was also characterized by the plywood monocoque frame and its main advantages were light weight and high rigidity. Encouraged by the success in its debut season, Nathan realized that the Astra RNR1 FVA was not competitive enough with the competitor Chevron B16, decided to develop a new car and equip it with the Cosworth FVC 1.8-liter 245 hp engine, plus powered for the 1970 season. The Astra RNR2, car in the photos, is chassis number 38, the first of the two built RNR2 that was driven by Roger Nathan himself. The chassis like the previous ones was a plywood monocoque. At both ends of the frame there were steel tubular frames on which the suspensions, the engine and the gearbox were anchored. The debut took place at 1000Km of Brands Hatch on April 12, 1970, although the car was previously entered for a race at Snetterton where it did not participate due to clutch problems and one at Thruxton, where for mechanical problems it did not even participate in practice. At Brands Hatch, Roger Nathan was ranked 16th overall. The season continued well and the Astra RNR2 won three national races, beating competitors Lola and Chevron. At the end of the 1970 season, the cars that had come to the very end of the development phase were definitely withdrawn.
