ALD 06 & ALD C289 - 1989
The French carmaker ALD (Automobiles Louis Descartes) was founded in 1983 by the driver Louis Descartes and was essentially composed of a group of enthusiasts. In the period 1985-1989, ALD produced some prototypes conforming to the regulation of the group C2, equipped with conventional aluminium or carbon fiber monocoques and with engines BMW M88, Ford Cosworth DFL, and also Audi WRT Turbo which was immediately discarded because not competitive. At the end of 1991 the team was dissolved after the death of its founder Louis Descartes. Between 1985 and 1994 ALD participated in the World Endurance Championship races and Descartes himself ran his cars, participating several times at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

La casa automobilistica francese ALD (Automobiles Louis Descartes) fu fondata nel 1983 dal pilota Louis Descartes ed era essenzialmente composta da un gruppo di appassionati. Nel periodo 1985-1989 la ALD produsse alcuni prototipi conformi al regolamento del gruppo C2 dotati di monoscocca in alluminio convenzionale o in fibra di carbonio e con motorizzazioni BMW M88, Ford Cosworth DFL, e anche Audi WRT Turbo che però fu subito scartato perché non competitivo. Alla fine del 1991 la squadra fu sciolta dopo la morte del suo fondatore Louis Descartes. Tra il 1985 e il 1994 le ALD parteciparono alle gare del Campionato Mondiale Endurance e lo stesso Descartes corse le sue realizzazioni partecipando diverse volte anche alla 24 Ore di Le Mans.
Nel 1989 furono costruite la ALD 06 e la ALD C289. |
ALD 06 chassis C2/06 - 1989
The ALD 06 was equipped with an ordinary aluminium monocoque and a 3.4-liter BMW M88 6-cylinder engine. The car, marked with the chassis number C2/06 in 1989 was entered at the Dijon 480 Km where the drivers Gérard Tremblay and Didier Bonnet failed to qualify for the race and in the same year participated to the Spa-Francorchamps 480 Km with François Wettling and Thierry Lecerf who came in 22nd place. The car resurfaced on the track only in 1994 to the Le Mans 24 Hours, run by the English team Stealth Engineering with the French drivers Dominique Lacaud, Sylvain Boulay and Bernard Robin behind the wheel. The crew was forced to retire at lap 96 due to the engine failure. The ALD 06 represents the last ALD car to have participated in the Le Mans 24 Hours and has remained with its livery and with its race number as well as in the photos.

La ALD 06 era dotata di una normale monoscocca in alluminio e di un motore 6 cilindri BMW M88 da 3,4 litri. La vettura contrassegnata dal numero di telaio C2/06 nel 1989 fu iscritta alla 480 Km di Digione dove i piloti Gérard Tremblay e Didier Bonnet non riuscirono a qualificarsi per la gara e nello stesso anno partecipò alla 480 Km di Spa-Francorchamps con François Wettling e Thierry Lecerf che giunsero al 22° posto. La vettura su ripresentò sulle piste solo nel 1994 alla 24 Ore di Le Mans gestita dalla squadra inglese Stealth Engineering con al volante i francesi Dominique Lacaud, Sylvain Boulay e Bernard Robin. L’equipaggio fu costretto al ritiro a 96° giro a causa della rottura del motore. La ALD 06 rappresenta l’ultima vettura ALD ad aver partecipato alla 24 Ore di Le Mans ed è rimasta con la sua livrea e con il suo numero di gara così come nelle foto.

ALD C289 - 1989
Also in 1989 was built the ALD C289, a new generation car built in a single specimen with a carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb monocoque, with a tubular rear frame in partial support of the Ford Cosworth DFL 3.3 liters and Hewland DGB gearbox 5-speed manual with which the car was equipped. The C289 participated in the FIA World Sports-Prototype Championship in 1989,1990 and 1991 without obtaining significant results. The car was restored and now it's shown in the blue livery with the race number 177 which ran the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1989 where, driven by Yves Hervalet, Alain Serpaggi and Louis Descartes himself, started from 58th position and was forced to retire on lap 75 due to the breakage of the radiator.

Sempre nel 1989 venne costruita la ALD C289, una vettura di nuova generazione costruita in unico esemplare con una monoscocca in fibra di carbonio e honeycomb di alluminio, con un telaio tubolare posteriore a sostegno parziale del Ford Cosworth DFL da 3.3 litri e del cambio Hewland DGB manuale a 5 rapporti con i quali la vettura era equipaggiata. La C289 partecipò alle gare del FIA World Sports-Prototype Championship del 1989 e del 1990 e 1991 senza ottenere risultati di rilievo. La vettura fu restaurata è riportata nella livrea blu con il numero di gara 177 con cui corse la 24 Ore di Le Mans nel 1989 dove, guidata da Yves Hervalet, Alain Serpaggi e dallo stesso Louis Descartes partì dalla 58° posizione e fu costretta al ritiro al 75° giro a causa della rottura del radiatore.

Nice book, full of very useful information for those who want to deepen their knowledge on the technical and historical aspects related to this type of cars. The themes of aerodynamics and its development over the years until the advent of the ground effect, the construction techniques of the frames, including those in composite materials, suspensions, brakes and transmissions, are explained in great detail. The part relating to the engines is also very interesting. The text is written in English, is very fluent and is accompanied by several photographs, all in black and white. It is definitely recommended for all fans, especially those of historic cars.

Bel libro, ricco di informazioni molto utili per che vuole approfondire la conoscenza sugli aspetti tecnici e storici legati a questo tipo di vetture. I temi dell’aerodinamica e il suo sviluppo negli anni fino all’avvento dell’effetto suolo, le tecniche di costruzione dei telai, compresi quelli in materiali compositi, di sospensioni, freni e trasmissioni, sono spiegati in modo molto dettagliato. Molto interessante anche la parte relativa ai propulsori. Il testo è scritto in inglese, è molto scorrevole ed è corredato da parecchie fotografie, tutte in bianco e nero. E’ un libro sicuramente consigliato a tutti gli appassionati, in particolare di auto storiche.
