The Maserati 250F was a Formula 1 car designed by Gioacchino Colombo in 1953 for the new regulation which provided atmosphere fueled engines with a maximum of 2.5 liters and 0.75 liter supercharged engines.
The engine, also designed by Gioacchino Colombo, was a six-cylinders, 2.5-liter (the car's marking indicated 250: two and a half litres, F: Formula) with aluminium crankcase and double camshaft , double Magneti Marelli magnet ignition and dry sump, capable of delivering up to 320 hp.
The engine was powered by three Weber 42 DCO3 double body carburettors.
The 4-speed gearbox coupled to the differential was on the rear axle to improve weight distribution.
The frame was of tubular type in steel, it had independent front suspensions with parallel arms, internal coil springs, hydraulic Houdaille lever shock absorbers, while on the back there was an unusual De Dion bridge with a transverse leaf spring with hydraulic Houdaille lever dampers and two longitudinal rods for side with function of neutralization of the acceleration and braking effect.
The hydraulic brakes were drum-front and rear. The bodywork, made by Medardo Fantuzzi, was aluminium with a generous cockpit openig. Initially the dirver was forced to sit riding the transmission shaft, then the engine was inclined to 6 degrees to pass the transmission shaft to the left of the driver to lower the centre of gravity of the car.
The fuel tank was placed behind the driver and the oil tank was behind the rear wheels. Over the years, the 250F underwent many modifications and trials, the injection system, the disc brakes, the gearbox that became 5-speed. The chassis also underwent several modifications and in 1957 the car became unbeatable while maintaining the drum brakes and feeding to carburettors. The race debut took place on January 18, 1954 at the Grand Prix of Argentina where Manuel Fangio won. The Argentine also won the Grand Prix of Belgium at Spa, before leaving the Maserati to move to the Mercedes.
In 1954, besides Manuel Fangio, ran with the Maserati 250F also Luigi Musso, Luigi Villoresi, Sergio Mantovani, Harry Shell, Onofre Marimòn, Roberto Mieres and Stirling Moss. The last one, although private runner, received official assistance. 1955 was not a year of success for the Maserati 250F, which only scored a few minor placements with Luigi Musso, Carlos Menditeguy, and Roberto Mieres, but in 1956 it returned to win with Stirling Moss, the Grand Prix of Montecarlo and Monza. 1957 was the culmination of the Maserati 250F career when Manuel Fangio won the world championship by winning 4 victories including the legendary one at Nurburgring. In 1958, when the World Constructors Championship was established, the 250F was technically outdated.
In the 1950s Maserati produced 28 250F cars, then between 1972 and 1996, 12 replicas were produced by former RAF pilot Cameron Millar. These cars, known as "Cameron Millar replicas", were numbered with chassis numbers 2522, 2511, and CM1 to CM10 and they have long been recognised by the FIA and national clubs as being eligible to receive FIA paperwork.

La Maserati 250F era una vettura di Formula 1 progettata da Gioacchino Colombo nel 1953 per la nuova regolamentazione che prevedeva motori ad alimentazione atmosfera con un massimo di 2,5 litri e motori sovralimentati da 0,75 litri. Il motore, anch'esso progettato da Gioacchino Colombo era un 6 cilindri in linea da 2,5 litri, (la sigla della vettura indicava 250: due litri e mezzo, F : Formula) con basamento in alluminio e dotato di doppio albero a camme, doppia accensione a magnete della "Magneti Marelli" e carter secco, in grado di erogare fino a 320 CV. Il motore era alimentato da tre carburatori doppio corpo Weber 42 DCO3. Il cambio a 4 rapporti accoppiato al differenziale si trovava sull'asse posteriore per migliorare la distribuzione dei pesi. Il telaio era di tipo tubolare in acciaio, aveva sospensioni anteriori indipendenti con bracci paralleli, molle elicoidali interne, ammortizzatori idraulici a leva Houdaille, mentre sul retro c'era un insolito ponte De Dion con molla a balestra trasversale ammortizzatori idraulici a leva Houdaille e due aste longitudinali per lato con funzione di neutralizzazione dell'effetto di accelerazione e frenata.
I freni idraulici erano tamburo anteriore e posteriore. La carrozzeria, realizzata da Medardo Fantuzzi, era in alluminio con un abitacolo spazioso che obbligava inizialmente il pilota a sedere a cavallo dell'albero di trasmissione. In seguito il motore fu inclinato di 6 gradi in modo da far passare l'albero di trasmissione sul lato sinistro del pilota per abbassare il baricentro della vettura. Il serbatoio del carburante era collocato alle spalle del pilota e il serbatoio dell'olio trovava posto nello sbalzo dietro le ruote posteriori. Nel corso degli anni, la 250F subì molte modifiche e sperimentazioni, il sistema di iniezione, i freni a disco, il cambio che diventò a 5 marce. Anche il telaio subì diverse modifiche e nel 1957 la vettura divenne imbattibile mantenendo tuttavia i freni a tamburo e l’alimentazione a carburatori. Il debutto in corsa avvenne il 18 Gennaio 1954 al Gran Premio di Argentina dove Manuel Fangio vinse. L’argentino vinse anche il Gran Premio del Belgio a Spa, prima di abbandonare la Maserati per trasferirsi alla Mercedes. Nel 1954 oltre a Manuel Fangio, corsero con la Maserati 250F anche Luigi Musso, Luigi Villoresi, Sergio Mantovani, Harry Shell, Onofre Marimòn, Roberto Mieres e Stirling Moss che sebbene corresse da privato, ottenne l’assistenza ufficiale. Il 1955 non fu un anno di successi per la Maserati 250F che ottenne solo qualche piazzamento con Luigi Musso, Carlos Menditeguy, e Roberto Mieres, ma nel 1956 tornò a vincere, con Stirling Moss, i Gran Premi di Montecarlo e Monza. Il 1957 rappresentò il culmine della carriera della Maserati 250F quando Manuel Fangio vinse il campionato mondiale ottenendo 4 vittorie tra le quali quella leggendaria al Nurburgring. Nel 1958, quando venne istituito il Campionato mondiale costruttori la 250F cominciava ad essere tecnicamente superata. Negli anni 50 Maserati produsse 28 vetture 250F, poi tra il 1972 e il 1996, furono prodotte 12 repliche dell’ex pilota della RAF Cameron Millar. Queste vetture, conosciute come “Cameron Millar replicas”, sono state numerate con i numeri di telaio 2522, 2511, e da CM1 a CM10 e sono da tempo riconosciuti dalla FIA e dai club nazionali come idonee a ricevere documenti FIA.

La Maserati 250F rappresenta una delle vetture da corsa più importati della storia dell'automobilismo. In questo bel libro, in lingua inglese, viene descritta nelle sue caratteristiche con dovizia di particolari e con molte foto sia in bianco e nero che a colori, molte d'epoca, di ottima qualità. Le interviste ai protagonisti del periodo, piloti e tecnici, nonché agli attuali proprietari che utilizzano le vetture in eventi storici, rendono la lettura appassionante. Nella sezione dedicata, viene ripercorsa la storia agonistica dal 1954 al 1963, comprese le gare nazionali o non titolate. È un libro che offre un ottimo rapporto qualità/prezzo che non dovrebbe mancare nella libreria dell'appassionato del marchio o delle corse in genere.

It is book rich of information about the history of Maserati models from 1923 to 2003. After the first pages dedicated to brand history, each model is well described both as a chassis and as a motor, including data on the number of cars produced and references regarding the year of production and chassis number. Many and appreciable photographs of the time, almost all in black and white. It's a book written in Italian that I recommend to car enthusiasts and fans.

È un libro ricco di informazioni sulla storia dei modelli Maserati dal 1923 al 2003. Dopo le prime pagine destinate alla storia del marchio, ogni modello è molto ben descritto sia come chassis che come motore, compresi i dati relativi al numero di vetture prodotte e i riferimenti riguardanti l'anno di produzione e numero di telaio. Molte e apprezzabili fotografie dell'epoca, quasi tutte in bianco e nero.
È un libro scritto in italiano che consiglio ad appassionati e cultori dell'auto.
