At the end of 1971, the first 3-liter sports prototype chassis, designed by Len Bailey and assigned to the 1972 World Championship for Makes, was assembled in the JWA, John Wyer Automotive, workshops. The new car, called Mirage M6, was fitted with the classic Ford Cosworth DFV, coupled to a Hewland DG300 gearbox. Chassis #601 was ready for the 1972 Sebring 12 hours and was shipped to America after two short testing session at Silverstone and Goodwood. The car, driven by the Englishman Derek Bell and the Dutchman Gijs van Lennep, was plagued by radiator cooling problems and transmission problems and after a half hour of race, was delayed  by a clutch failure. The same crew drove the Mirage M6 #601 at the Brands Hatch 1000 Km, where they were not classified and then, to the Spa-Francorchamps 1000 Km and Nurburgring 1000 Km, where they came in fourth place in both competitions. For the Zeltweg 1000 Km, on June 25, the second M6 car was set up, the #602, which scored the third place at the Watkins Glen 6 hours, on July 22, driven by Derek Bell and Carlos Pace. Three other cars were assembled for the 1973 World Championship, the #603, the #604 and the #605. The latter car, on May 6, 1973, won the Spa-Francorchamps 1000 Km, driven by Derek Bell and Mike Hailwood while the #602 came second driven by Howden Ganley and the Australian Vern Schuppan. On September 16, 1973 at the Imola 500 Km, Derek Bell obtained the second and last victory for the Mirage M6 and the only victory for chassis #601, preceding on the finish line the Stommelen's Alfa Romeo 33/3. The last result of 1973 was the second place obtained at the Kyalami 9 hours by Derek Bell paired with James Hunt. For the 1974 season, four of the five Mirage M6s were modified in aerodynamics, lengthening the nose and moving the wing further back and lightened in the chassis, with the use of some titanium components, taking the name of Mirage GR7. Throughout 1974 the M6 / GR7 cars, raced for the John Wyer's Gulf Research Racing team, obtaining as best result, the second place at the Spa-Francorchamps 1000 Km with Derek Bell and Mike Hailwood at the wheel. In 1975 two cars were lined up by Georg Loos' Gelo Racing Team, obtaining the second place at the Nurburgring 1000 Km with Howden Ganley and Tim Schenken as the best result.
