In 1966 Porsche designed and built the 906 model, also known as the Carrera-6, to replace the 904 model, to be used mainly in the Marche World Championship races. The car was equipped with the type 901 six-cylinder, air-cooled engine, equipped with twin triple-choke Weber carburettors capable of developing 210 hp, coupled with a 5-speed magnesium gearbox. The tubular frame and the glass fiber coupé body made it possible to have a particularly low weight of no more than 620 kilos. Particular was the opening of the doors, gull-wing, which allowed more convenient and quick access for drivers. The body with the elongated nose, the rounded windshield and the engine bonnet that ended with the truncated tail Kamm, were the result of the first studies carried out by Porsche in the wind tunnel.

Nel 1966 Porsche progettò e costruì il modello 906, noto anche come Carrera 6 per sostituire il modello 904, da impiegare principalmente nelle gare del Campionato Mondiale Marche. La vettura era dotata del motore sei cilindri boxer tipo 901, raffreddato ad aria da 2 litri del modello 911, dotato di due carburatori triplo corpo Weber in grado di sviluppare 210 CV, accoppiato con un cambio in magnesio a 5 rapporti sincronizzati. Il telaio di tipo tubolare e la carrozzeria coupé in fibra di vetro consentivano di avere il peso, particolarmente basso, di non oltre 620 chili. Particolare era l’apertura delle portiere, ad ala di gabbiano, che consentiva ai piloti un accesso più comodo e rapido. La carrozzeria con il muso allungato, il parabrezza arrotondato e il cofano motore che terminava con la coda tronca tipo Kamm erano il risultato dei primi studi effettuati dalla Porsche nella galleria del vento.

The Porsche 906 made its debut in February 1966, at the Daytona 24 hours driven by Herbert Linge and Hans Herrmann, with a sixth place overall and the victory in the class up to 2 liters. In the same year a car entered by Scuderia Filipinetti, won the Targa Florio with Herbert Müller and Willy Mairesse, at Le Mans 24 hours, three 906 fitted with a long tail body, obtained the sixth, seventh and eighth place overall behind the Ford GT40.
Until the end of the 60s the Porsche 906 remained competitive and achieved several successes in both circuit races and hillclimbs. A total of 52 Porsche 906s were built, as well as nine prototypes with an injection system and four with 2.0-liter eight-cylinder engines. |
La Porsche 906 debuttò nel febbraio del 1966, alla 24 ore di Daytona pilotata da Herbert Linge e Hans Herrmann, con un sesto posto assoluto e la vittoria nella classe fino a 2 litri. Nello stesso anno una vettura iscritta dalla scuderia Filipinetti, vinse la Targa Florio con Herbert Müller e Willy Mairesse e alla 24 ore di Le Mans, tre 906 allestite con una carrozzeria a coda lunga, ottennero il sesto, settimo e ottavo posto assoluto dietro alle Ford GT40. Fino alla fine degli anni 60 la Porsche 906 rimase competitiva e ottenne diversi successi sia in gare in circuito che nelle salite.
In totale furono costruite 52 Porsche 906, oltre a nove prototipi dotati del sistema a iniezione e quattro con i motori a otto cilindri da 2,0 litri. |

Nice book, full of very useful information for those who want to deepen their knowledge on the technical and historical aspects related to this type of cars. The themes of aerodynamics and its development over the years until the advent of the ground effect, the construction techniques of the frames, including those in composite materials, suspensions, brakes and transmissions, are explained in great detail. The part relating to the engines is also very interesting. The text is written in English, is very fluent and is accompanied by several photographs, all in black and white. It is definitely recommended for all fans, especially those of historic cars.

Bel libro, ricco di informazioni molto utili per che vuole approfondire la conoscenza sugli aspetti tecnici e storici legati a questo tipo di vetture. I temi dell’aerodinamica e il suo sviluppo negli anni fino all’avvento dell’effetto suolo, le tecniche di costruzione dei telai, compresi quelli in materiali compositi, di sospensioni, freni e trasmissioni, sono spiegati in modo molto dettagliato. Molto interessante anche la parte relativa ai propulsori. Il testo è scritto in inglese, è molto scorrevole ed è corredato da parecchie fotografie, tutte in bianco e nero. E’ un libro sicuramente consigliato a tutti gli appassionati, in particolare di auto storiche.
