At the end of 1977 Alan Rees, Jackie Oliver, Dave Wass and Tony Southgate left Team Shadow and in a very short time gave rise to a new Formula 1 Team: The Arrows.
The first car built, in anticipation of the 1978 season, was the Arrows FA1, where FA were the initials of the Italian entrepreneur Franco Ambrosio, the founder of the project. To build the car, the new team had no more than three months, to be able to take part to the second Grand Prix of the season in Brazil and not to miss the FOCA transport bonus. Southgate decided to keep the design as similar as possible to the Shadow DN9 he had just finished designing and the Arrows FA1 was finally ready. The new single-seater was presented at Silverstone, on a track covered by snow and immediately shipped to Brazil for its debut. The driver, Riccardo Patrese, should have been joined by the Swedish Gunnar Nilsson, but this, unfortunately, did not happen. The considerable similarity of the FA1 with the Shadow DN9, which would debut later, at the United States Grand Prix at Long Beach, was immediately evident and soon the story ended in court. The Arrows FA1 had proved particularly good and much faster than the "sister" Shadow, but the team was forced to destroy it and to start building a new car, the Arrows A1.
The design of the new car began at the end of May and the first Arrows A1 was ready in 57 days while the second 10 days later, before the final court judgment was issued. The cars were ready to debut at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Alla fine del 1977 Alan Rees, Jackie Oliver, Dave Wass e Tony Southgate abbandonarono il Team Shadow e in brevissimo tempo diedero origine a un nuovo Team di Formula 1: La Arrows. La prima vettura costruita, in previsione della stagione 1978 fu la Arrows FA1, dove FA erano le iniziali dell’imprenditore italiano Franco Ambrosio, finanziatore del progetto. Per costruire la vettura la nuova squadra aveva a disposizione non più di tre mesi per potersi presentare al secondo Gran Premio della stagione, in Brasile e non perdere il bonus trasporti della FOCA. Southgate decise di mantenere il disegno più simile possibile alla Shadow DN9 che aveva appena finito di progettare e la alla fine la Arrows FA1 fu pronta. La nuova monoposto fu presentata a Silverstone, su una pista ricoperta di neve e subito spedita in Brasile per il debutto. I pilota, Riccardo Patrese, avrebbe dovuto essere affiancato dallo svedese Gunnar Nilsson, ma questo, purtroppo non successe. La marcata similitudine della FA1 con la Shadow DN9, che avrebbe debuttato più avanti, al Gran Premio degli Stati Uniti a Long Beach, fu subito evidente e in breve la vicenda finì in tribunale. La Arrows FA1 si era dimostrata particolarmente valida e molto più veloce della “gemella” Shadow, ma il team fu costretto a distruggerla e ad intraprendere la costruzione di una nuova vettura, la Arrows A1. La progettazione della nuova vettura iniziò alla fine di maggio e la prima Arrows A1 fu pronta in 57 giorni mentre la seconda 10 giorni dopo, prima che fosse emessa la sentenza definitiva del tribunale. Le vetture furono pronte al debutto al Gran Premio d’Austria.

The new Arrows A1, resumed in general lines the previous FA1 but was a completely different car. The usual Ford Cosworth DFV coupled to a Hewland FG400 gearbox was mounted, as usual, as stressed element on an open-type aluminium monocoque chassis, with the only fuel tank centrally located.
Large tunnels in the sides, shaped like a wing profile, ensured the ground effect thanks to the least disturbed air flow possible. For this purpose the rear suspensions were redesigned without radius rods and with shock absorbers positioned above the gearbox. The car had a rather long nosecone, a distinctive feature of Southgate's latest creations, which contained the oil cooler. The water radiators found a place into the sides. The season, not excellent, ended with Riccardo Patrese fourth place at the Canadian Grand Prix.

La nuova Arrows A1, riprendeva nelle linee generali la precedente FA1 ma era in realtà completamente differente. Il solito Ford Cosworth DFV accoppiato ad un cambio Hewland FG400 era montato in funzione portante su un telaio monoscocca in alluminio di tipo aperto, con l’unico serbatoio per il carburante posizionato centralmente. Grandi tunnel nelle fiancate conformate a profilo alare, assicuravano l’effetto suolo grazie ad un flusso l’aria il meno disturbato possibile. A tale scopo le sospensioni posteriori furono ridisegnate, senza puntoni di reazione e con ammortizzatori posizionati sopra al cambio. La vettura presentava un muso piuttosto lungo, tratto distintivo delle ultime realizzazione di Southgate, che conteneva il radiatore dell’olio. I radiatori per l’acqua trovarono posto all’interno delle fiancate. La stagione, non eccellente, si concluse con il quarto posto di Riccardo Patrese al Gran Premio del Canada.

The A1 was also used in the first half of the 1979 season, with a series of modifications and improvements implemented since the Spanish Grand Prix at Jarama, such to allow to rename the car as Arrows A1B.The car in the photos is the chassis #03, the third of 6 built and was used by Riccardo Patrese at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza and the Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal in 1978. In 1979 it was used in the first two Grand Prix, Argentina and Brazil, by Jochen Mass.

La A1 fu utilizzata anche nella prima metà della stagione 1979, con una serie di modifiche e miglioramenti a partire dal Gran Premio di Spagna a Jarama, tali da poterla chiamare Arrows A1B. La vettura nelle foto è il telaio 03, la terza di 6 costruite e fu utilizzata da Riccardo Patrese al Gran Premio d’Italia a Monza e al Gran Premio del Canada a Montreal nel 1978. Nel 1979 fu utilizzata nei primi due Gran Premi, Argentina e Brasile, da Jochen Mass.
