Sandomierz, Poland
Sandomierz is one of the oldest Polish cities, located on the left bank of the Vistula. Thanks to its position on the road leading to Ukraine, Hungary and towards the river mouth of the Vistula on the Baltic Sea, it became a thriving commercial center between the 12th and 14th centuries. The city had to be rebuilt several times because of the repeated Tartars assaults between 1241 and 1287 and during the reign of Casimiro the Great, it became the capital of an autonomous principality. In 1570, an agreement was reached in Sandomierz that sanctioned reconciliation between Lutherans, Calvinists and Bohemian brothers. In 1795 it became Austrian and began its decline. It then became Russian until 1918, when it became part of the state of Poland.

Sandomierz è una tra le più antiche città polacche, posta sulla riva sinistra della Vistola. Grazie alla sua posizione, sulla via che portava verso l’Ucraina, l’Ungheria e verso la foce della Vistola sul mar Baltico, divenne tra il XII XIV secolo un fiorente centro commerciale. La città dovette essere ricostruita più volte a causa dei ripetuti assalti dei Tartari tra il 1241 e il 1287 e durante il regno di Casimiro il Grande, divenne la capitale di un principato autonomo. Nel 1570 a Sandomierz venne stretto un accordo che sancì la riconciliazione tra luterani, calvinisti e fratelli boemi. Nel 1795 divenne austriaca e iniziò il suo declino. Divenne poi russa fino al 1918, quando entrò a far parte della stato di Polonia.
