The Aston Martin DP212 was built in 1962 in a single specimen to take part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The engine was a 4-liter, straight 6-cylinder engine derived from the DB4 GT with double overhead camshaft, dual ignition and powered by three Weber 50 DCO double body carburettors, coupled to a four-speed gearbox. The front suspensions were derived from the DB4 GT, a De Dion system with a Watt parallelogram and stabilizer bar was installed on the rear. The chassis, also derived of DB4 GT, was made up of a frame of steel tubes and the bodywork was a particularly aerodynamic shape made of aluminium and magnesium alloy, designed for Le Mans' high speeds. The Aston Martin DP212 debuted at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1962 driven by Graham Hill and Richie Ginther, qualifying with the fourth time in practice but during the race was forced to retire due to the the oil pump breakdown after having occupied the second place. Despite its remarkable speed, the car showed serious stability problems due to the shape of the rear body. For the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1963, the car was equipped with a truncated tail. At the Le Mans test in April the car was entered with Lucien Bianchi, Jo Schlesser, Richie Ginther and Bill Kimberley, and scored the fifth time but it was not participated in the race.
