In the 1978’s Paris Motor Show the new coupé “M1” was presented by BMW. The car who according to the initial plans should have been built by Lamborghini, was designed and built by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign. The frames were built in Modena by the specialist Marchesi, the plastic bodywork was produced by TIR of Reggio Emilia, the electronic ignition was from Magneti Marelli. At the Motor Show along with the road car, a competition version was also on display because in the same occasion a new mono-brand championship called "ProCar" was presented, which provided the use of the new BMW M1 developed for the competitions. The new championship was born on suggestion of the founder of the BMW racing department Jochen Neerpasch after the leaders of the Munich brand thought to use the new car in the World Sport-Prototype Championship in the Group 5 category. Based on the new regulation issued by the FIA in 1977, only after the construction of 400 units and after the homologation in Group 4 the homologation in Group 5 was allowed. For this reason the cars were prepared for the ProCar M1 Championship according to the Group 4 specifications.

The Championship took place in 1979 and 1980, and in the last year there were also three races not coinciding with the Formula 1 Grand Prixes. In 1979, the ProCar Championship winner was Niki Lauda at the wheel of a car run by Team Project Four, the following year the title was awarded to Nelson Piquet with a BMW Motorsport car. With the entry into Formula 1 of BMW as a supplier of engines, the ProCar championship was not more organized and the cars, homologated in Group 4, and later in Group 5, were used by several private teams in the Sport-Prototype World Championship, in the German Touring Car Championship and in the IMSA Championship, participating on various occasions at the Le Mans 24 Hours and at the most prestigious endurance races.
