Before the start of the 1972 season, Matra decided that the new Matra-Simca MS670 would be built exclusively for the 24 hours of Le Mans. In all the other events of the 1972 World Championships for Makes would have been absent. The car was equipped with the new 2.992cc  V12  MS72  engine,  already used in Formula 1
Le Mans 1972:
Sunday morning, in the rain, the short-tailed Matra-Simca MS670, with the race number 15, driven by Henry Pescarolo and Graham Hill, was in second place, behind the long-tailed sister car, with the race number 14 driven by François Cévert and Howden Ganley.  Graham Hill, at  the  wheel  at the time and on wet tires, was very fast and was getting  closer  and  closer to Ganley's car, who was leading, but still riding  dry  tires.
The  distance between the two Matras had dropped  to two minutes when Ganley, surprised by a sudden  shower of rain, suddenly slowed down and the Marie-Claude Beaumont's Chevrolet Corvette, that  was behind  him,  it  was unable to brake in time and dabbed the Matra. Ganley slowly  returned to the pits, with the bodywork on the left rear  side damaged. A  series  of  pit  stops were needed to replace the bodywork, some components  of the electrical system and  the  arms of  the  left  rear  suspension,  during  which  Ganley and Cévert's Matra lost time leaving the victory to Henri Pescarolo and Graham Hill.
At  the  end  of  the race, Henri Pescarolo referring to Graham Hill said:
"At first I was not happy to have Graham on the team: ...  he was F1 World Champion, Indianapolis winner ...  I thought he would avoid the risks that Le Mans imposes. Instead  it  was  at  night  and  in the rain that we made the difference, and thanks to Graham. Really a great guy. ”

A fine gara, Henri Pescarolo riferendosi a Graham Hill disse:

This little book, written by former driver Ed McDonough, in English, is very interesting for who want to know the sport history of the great French brand from 1966 to 1974. You will not find a great technical detail, but the descriptions of individual races to which the Matra participated, including the details of individual chassis numbers, are many well-described and beautiful to read. The book features a variety of colour and B&W photographs of the cars involved in the races of the time.
