The rules of the new International Championship for Makes, in force from 1968 to 1971, included the use of prototype cars called Group 6, equipped with 3-liter engines. In addition to Group 6, Group 4 was also introduced that allowed the use of 5-liter engines but required the construction of at least 50 specimens, then brought to 25. Porsche was just back from defeat at Le Mans 1968 where it scored second behind the Ford GT40 with a 5-liter engine and when in Zuffenhausen came rumours that Ferrari was planning to build 25 specimens of its 5-liter prototype (Ferrari 512S), in July 1968 decided to start production of 25 specimens needed for a prototype to win the Le Mans 24 hours. Time was not enough to design and make something completely new, so the existing long tail Porsche 908 was used as the starting chassis base. The starting point for the engine was the classic 6-cylinder boxer air cooled and following that scheme, was designed a 4.5-liter 12 cylinder engine capable of delivering 580 hp. In 10 months Porsche produced the 25 specimens that were examined by the CSI commission which granted the omologation on April 20, 1969.

Le regole del nuovo Campionato Internazionale Marche, in vigore da 1968 al 1971, prevedevano l’impiego di vetture prototipo denominate Gruppo 6, dotate di motori da 3 litri. Oltre al Gruppo 6 venne introdotto anche il Gruppo 4 che concedeva l'utilizzo di motori da 5 litri ma imponeva la costruzione di almeno 50 esemplari, portati poi a 25. La Porsche era reduce dalla sconfitta alla Le Mans 1968 dove risultò seconda battuta da una Ford GT40 con motore da 5 litri e quando a Zuffenhausen giunsero le voci che Ferrari aveva intenzione di costruire 25 esemplari del suo prototipo da 5 litri (Ferrari 512S) decisero, nel Luglio 1968 ad avviare la produzione dei 25 esemplari necessari di un prototipo per vincere la 24 ore di Le Mans. Il tempo non era sufficiente per progettare e realizzare qualcosa di completamente nuovo, così per il telaio fu utilizzato come base di partenza quello della Porsche 908 a coda lunga. La base di partenza per il motore fu il classico 6 cilindri boxer raffreddato ad aria, che consentì di progettare un 12 cilindri da 4,5 litri in grado di erogare 520 CV. In 10 mesi Porsche realizzò i 25 esemplari che il 20 aprile 1969 furono esaminati dalla commissione CSI che concesse l’omologazione.

Two of these cars, the chassis 002, number 4,5 in the photo and the chassis 003, number 46 in the picture had already been taken to the preliminary tests of March 30 at the Le Mans, where the car with the number 4,5 driven by Rolf Stommelen had been the fastest. The Porsche 917 was presented at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show (chassis 001, the one with the number 917 in the photo). Potential buyers could have buy a Porsche 917 by spending 140,000 German Marks. Despite the performance at Le Mans test, the car was very unstable at high speeds to be almost uncontrollable despite the mobile rear stabilizing wings attached to the suspensions that allowed the car not to take off on the straight. The stabilizing wings, as mobile aerodynamic elements, were banned from the regulation and were only accepted for Le Mans 24 hours as they were considered essential to safety.

Due di queste vetture, chassis 002 numero 4,5 nella foto e chassis 003 numero 46 nella foto erano già stati portati alle prove preliminari del 30 marzo a le Mans, dove la vettura col numero 4,5 pilotata da Rolf Stommelen era stata la più veloce. La Porsche 917 fu presentata al Motor Show di Ginevra del 1969 (chassis 001, quella con il numero 917 nella foto). I potenziali acquirenti avrebbero potuto acquistare una Porsche 917 spendendo 140.000 Marchi Tedeschi. Nonostante la prestazione ottenuta nei test di Le Mans, la vettura era molto instabile alle alte velocità tanto da risultare quasi incontrollabile, nonostante delle ali stabilizzatrici posteriori mobili collegate alle sospensioni che permettevano alla vettura di non decollare sul rettilineo. Le ali stabilizzatrici, in quanto elementi aerodinamici mobili, erano vietate dal regolamento e furono accettate in deroga solo per la 24 ore di Le Mans in quanto ritenute indispensabili per la sicurezza.

The debut took place at Spa 1000 Km, where two cars were registered, the chassis 003 and the chassis 024, both cars in the short tail version. Only the chassis 024 took the start driven by Gerhard Mitter and Udo Schütz. Under the rain, the race lasted less than a lap. Due to a wrong gear change of Mitter the engine overreving and broke.

Il debutto avvenne alla 1000 Km di Spa, dove furono iscritte due vetture, la 003 e la 024 entrambe nella versione a coda corta. Solo la 024 prese il via guidata da Gerhard Mitter e Udo Schütz. Sotto la pioggia, la gara durò meno di un giro. A causa di una cambiata sbagliata di Mitter e relativo fuori giri, il motore si ruppe.

The Porsche drivers began refusing to drive the car that continued to be unstable and dangerous at high speeds. The next race was the Le Mans 24 Hours, the race for which the Porsche 917 had been built. The 917 entered the race were 4 all in long tail configuration (LH): Chassis 005 was purchased by gentleman driver John Wolfe he ran in pair with Herbert Linge, chassis 007 and 008 were entered by Porsche, respectively for Rolf Stommelen / Kurt Ahrens and Vic Elford / Richard Attwood. The chassis 006 only attended in practice.

At the start of the race, the British John Wolfe was killed in an accident before the end of the first lap.
Despite all, the Porsche 917 LH behaved well. They scored the first and second time in practice and during the race were leading for 19 hours until the clutch surrendered on the car chassis 008. The chassis 007 was stopped in the night for gearbox troubles. The next race, the 1000km Zeltweg, scored the first victory for the Porsche 917 driven by Jo Siffert and Kurt Ahrens on board the chassis 009.

Alla partenza, il britannico John Wolfe rimase ucciso in un incidente prima della fine del primo giro. Nonostante tutto le Porsche 917 LH si comportarono bene. Segnarono il primo e secondo tempo in prova e rimasero al comando per 19 ore fino a che la frizione cedette sulla vettura 008. La vettura 007 fu fermata nella notte per problemi al cambio. La gara successiva, la 1000 Km di Zeltweg, segnò la prima vittoria per la Porsche 917 ad opera di Jo Siffert e Kurt Ahrens, a bordo della vettura 009.

During a test on the Salzburgring circuit, in anticipation of the 1970 season, a Porsche 917 of the John Wyer's JW Automotive team, with Brian Redman's at the wheel, was modified at the rear by giving it an upward profile and leaving the bottom open, according to the scheme of Porsche 917 PA spyder, made for the Can Am. The result was immediately positive and the new tail made the car faster than 4 seconds per lap. The 917K (Kurzheck, short tail) version, much more stable and fast, was introduced for the 1970s season and used with aerodynamic changes and different engine displacement up to 5 litres, even for the 1971 season. Both in 1970 and 1971, the Porsche 917K won the Le Mans 24 hour, respectively with Hans Hermann / Richard Attwood and Helmut Marko / Gijs Van Lennep and the World Sports Prototype Championships.

Durante un test sul circuito di Salzburgring, in previsione della stagione 1970, una Porsche 917 gestita dal team JW Automotive di John Wyer con al volante Brian Redman, fu modificata nella coda dandole un profilo ascendente e lasciando la parte inferiore aperta, secondo la schema della Porsche 917 PA spyder, realizzata per la Can Am. Il risultato fu subito positivo e la nuova coda rese la vettura più veloce di 4 secondi al giro. La versione 917K (Kurzheck, coda corta), molto più stabile e veloce fu introdotta per la stagione 1970 e utilizzata con modifiche aerodinamiche e incrementi di cilindrata fino a 4,9 litri, anche per la stagione 1971. Sia nel 1970 che nel 1971, la Porsche 917K si aggiudicò la 24 ore di Le Mans, rispettivamente con Hans Hermann / Richard Attwood e Helmut Marko / Gijs Van Lennep e il Campionato Mondiale Sport Prototipi.

There are many publications relating to the Porsche 917. This one by Haynes, in English is undoubtedly very interesting, the degree of detail in which the subject is developed is high and the many photos of the vehicle details in color are of adequate quality. This publication also contains very pleasant interviews with the protagonists of the period and the section dedicated to the description of each chassis built is sufficiently complete. The value for money is great. For those who want to deal with the Porsche 917 argument, it's a recommended book.

Esistono molte pubblicazioni relative alla Porsche 917. Questa di Haynes, in inglese, è indubbiamente molto interessante, il grado di dettaglio in cui viene sviluppato l'argomento è elevato e le molte foto dei particolari della vettura, a colori, sono di qualità adeguata. Anche questa pubblicazione contiene interviste ai protagonisti del periodo molto piacevoli e la sezione dedicata alla descrizione di ogni telaio prodotto è sufficientemente completa. Il rapporto qualità/prezzo è ottimo. Per chi desidera affrontare l'argomento Porsche 917, è un libro consigliato.

Nice book, full of very useful information for those who want to deepen their knowledge on the technical and historical aspects related to this type of cars. The themes of aerodynamics and its development over the years until the advent of the ground effect, the construction techniques of the frames, including those in composite materials, suspensions, brakes and transmissions, are explained in great detail. The part relating to the engines is also very interesting. The text is written in English, is very fluent and is accompanied by several photographs, all in black and white. It is definitely recommended for all fans, especially those of historic cars.

Bel libro, ricco di informazioni molto utili per che vuole approfondire la conoscenza sugli aspetti tecnici e storici legati a questo tipo di vetture. I temi dell’aerodinamica e il suo sviluppo negli anni fino all’avvento dell’effetto suolo, le tecniche di costruzione dei telai, compresi quelli in materiali compositi, di sospensioni, freni e trasmissioni, sono spiegati in modo molto dettagliato. Molto interessante anche la parte relativa ai propulsori. Il testo è scritto in inglese, è molto scorrevole ed è corredato da parecchie fotografie, tutte in bianco e nero. E’ un libro sicuramente consigliato a tutti gli appassionati, in particolare di auto storiche.
