The Rondeau M382 was a transition car, built in 1982, waiting for the new Rondeau M482 to be ready to compete. The car was first tracked on the Bugatti Le Mans circuit for a first shakedown and then at Paul Ricard at the beginning of 1982 for the first tests. The race debut took place in Monza for 1000 Km where the car won, driven by Giorgio Francia and Henri Pescarolo.
It was a completely conventional car and it was a development of the previous M379, with a different chassis that remained of tubular type reinforced with aluminium panels and rear suspension modified and equipped with a superior rocker system. From the aerodynamic point of view, the reinforced glass fibre body was very similar to the M379 model and the ground effect was somewhat modest. The gearbox was completely new and it was a Hewland VG5 modified by Rondeau himself. The new chassis and the new gearbox allowed the Ford Cosworth DFL V8 3.9-liter V8 engine to be mounted full stressed. The engine was tuned by the Swiss specialist Heini Mader. The experiences gathered with the Rondeau M382 should have used to develop the new car, the M482. The chassis number 004 after the debut race in Monza was only used twice more, at Le Mans and Spa in the same year. In all, 7 cars M382 were built. |
La Rondeau M382 era una vettura di transizione, costruita nel 1982 in attesa che la nuova vettura Rondeau M482 fosse pronta a gareggiare. La vettura fu portata in pista per la prima volta sul circuito Bugatti di Le Mans per un primo collaudo e poi al Paul Ricard, all’inizio dell’anno 1982 per le prime prove. Il debutto in gara avvenne a Monza per la 1000 Km dove la vettura vinse con alla guida Giorgio Francia e Henri Pescarolo.
Si trattava di una vettura del tutto convenzionale ed era uno sviluppo della M379 precedente, con un telaio diverso che rimaneva però di tipo tubolare rinforzato con pannelli in alluminio e sospensioni posteriori modificate e dotate di un sistema a bilanciere superiore. Dal punto di vista aerodinamico, la carrozzeria in fibra di vetro rinforzato era molto simile al modello M379 e lo sfruttamento dell’effetto suolo era alquanto modesto. Il cambio era del tutto nuovo ed era uno Hewland VG5 modificato dallo stesso Rondeau. Il nuovo telaio e il nuovo cambio permisero di montare con funzione portante il motore Ford Cosworth DFL V8 da 3,9 litri, preparato dallo specialista svizzero Heini Mader. Le esperienze raccolte con la Rondeau M382 avrebbero dovuto servire per sviluppare la nuova vettura, la M482. Il telaio numero 004 dopo la gara di debutto a Monza, fu impiegato solo altre due volte, a Le Mans e a Spa nello stesso anno. In tutto, del modello M382 furono costruite 7 vetture. |

Nice book, full of very useful information for those who want to deepen their knowledge on the technical and historical aspects related to this type of cars. The themes of aerodynamics and its development over the years until the advent of the ground effect, the construction techniques of the frames, including those in composite materials, suspensions, brakes and transmissions, are explained in great detail. The part relating to the engines is also very interesting. The text is written in English, is very fluent and is accompanied by several photographs, all in black and white. It is definitely recommended for all fans, especially those of historic cars.

Bel libro, ricco di informazioni molto utili per che vuole approfondire la conoscenza sugli aspetti tecnici e storici legati a questo tipo di vetture. I temi dell’aerodinamica e il suo sviluppo negli anni fino all’avvento dell’effetto suolo, le tecniche di costruzione dei telai, compresi quelli in materiali compositi, di sospensioni, freni e trasmissioni, sono spiegati in modo molto dettagliato. Molto interessante anche la parte relativa ai propulsori. Il testo è scritto in inglese, è molto scorrevole ed è corredato da parecchie fotografie, tutte in bianco e nero. E’ un libro sicuramente consigliato a tutti gli appassionati, in particolare di auto storiche.
