Ford GT40
The Ford GT40 was born at the beginning of the 1960s by the rivalry in the sports field between Ford and Ferrari. For 1962, the FIA decided to cancel the World Sports Car Championship by replacing it with the new International Championship for GT Manufacturers. Henry Ford was a promoter of car racing as advertising to promote his brand and after the failure to buy Ferrari team to make the Ford Motor Company racing department, founded the FAV (Ford Advanced Vehicle) based in England with the aim to build a GT car with which to beat Ferrari on the tracks.
As a base for the project, the choice was a car just built by Lola, the mk6 GT, which condensed the best technology of the era. From the collaboration with Eric Broadley's Lola, the Ford GT40 was born, which was presented at the 1964 New York Auto Show. The number “40” indicated the height of the car, in inches, measured at the top of the windscreen. The car was equipped with a 4.2-liter Ford V8 engine. The cars first brought to the 1000 km of Nurburgring and then to the 24-hour Le Mans did not succeed and they faced both structural and aerodynamic defects so heavy that technicians were forced to redesign the car for 1965 The new car with a 4.7 litre engine started right away winning the Daytona 2000km . With the 1966 MKII version and the 1967 MkIV version with the 7 litre engine and with the updated versions of the 1968 and 1969 MkI with the 5 litre engines, the Ford GT40 conquered four times the 24-hour Le Mans. In 1966, however, Ford Motor Company decided to close the FAV and transfer the production of prototypes to the United States by selling to a new company, JW Automotive by John Wyer the plant, the license to build the GT40 and leaving the task of managing the maintenance of both road and competition cars. |
La Ford GT40 nacque all'inizio degli anni 60 dalla rivalità in campo sportivo tra Ford e Ferrari. Per il 1962 la FIA aveva deciso di sostituire il Campionato Mondiale per vetture sport (World Sports Car Championship) rimpiazzandolo con il nuovo Campionato Internazionale per vetture GT (International Championship for GT Manufacturers). Henry Ford, sostenitore delle corse automobilistiche come mezzo pubblicitario per promuovere il proprio marchio, dopo il fallimento del tentativo di acquistare la scuderia Ferrari per farne il reparto corse della Ford Motor Company fondò la FAV (Ford Advanced Vehicle) con sede in Inghilterra con lo scopo di costruire una vettura GT con la quale battere la Ferrari sulle piste.
Come base per il progetto fu scelta una vettura appena costruita dalla Lola, la mk6 GT, che condensava le migliori tecnologie dell'epoca. Dalla collaborazione con la Lola di Eric Broadley, nacque la Ford GT40 che fu presentata all'"Auto Show" di New York del 1964. Il numero "40" indicava l'altezza della vettura, in pollici, misurata alla sommità del parabrezza. La vettura era dotata di un motore Ford V8 da 4,2 litri. Le vetture portate prima alla 1000 km del Nurburgring e poi alla 24 ore di Le Mans, non ebbero molto successo e palesarono difetti sia strutturali che aerodinamici così gravi da costringere i tecnici a riprogettare l'auto per il 1965. La nuova vettura con un motore da 4,7 litri, partì subito col piede giusto conquistando la vittoria alla 2000km di Daytona. Con le versioni MkII del 1966 e MkIV del 1967 con motore da 7 litri, e con le versioni aggiornate delle MkI nel 1968 e 1969 con motori da 5 litri, le Ford GT40 conquistarono consecutivamente 4 volte la 24 ore di Le Mans. Nel 1966 tuttavia la Ford Motor Company decise di chiudere la FAV è di trasferire la produzione dei prototipi negli Stati Uniti vendendo ad una nuova società, la JW Automotive di John Wyer lo stabilimento, la licenza per costruire le GT40 e lasciando il compito di gestire la manutenzione sia delle vetture stradali che da competizione. |

A beautiful book, rich in black and white and color photos, many of the time, and accurate descriptions that cover the history of the Ford GT40 from its original design. Particularly detailed sections on car construction and development, its anatomy, drivers and engineer interviews, restoration and use in historical car races, technical specifications. Given the number of specimens produced and used in racing, the detailed history of some of the most representative cars is covered. This book also offers a very good value for money and is definitely recommended to all enthusiasts.

Un bel libro, ricco di foto in bianco e nero e a colori, molte dell’epoca e di e accurate descrizioni che ripercorrono la storia della Ford GT40 fin dal suo progetto iniziale. Molto ben dettagliate le sezioni che riguardano la costruzione e lo sviluppo della vettura, la sua anatomia, le interviste a piloti e ingegneri, il restauro e l’utilizzo in gare di auto storiche, le specifiche tecniche. Dato il numero di esemplari prodotti e utilizzati nelle corse, viene ripercorsa la storia dettagliata solo di alcune delle vetture più rappresentative. Anche questo libro offre un rapporto qualità/ prezzo molto buono ed è sicuramente consigliato a tutti gli appassionati.

A gripping story of extreme determination that tells how the American brand conquered Le Mans 24 hours for four consecutive years, pursuing the goal of defeating Ferrari. It is a very detailed book full of beautiful photographs. Written in English.

Se non ci fosse stato il rifiuto di Enzo Ferrari a cedere alla Ford la sua azienda, questo bellissimo libro non sarebbe mai stato scritto. Una avvincente storia di estrema determinazione che racconta come fece la casa americana a sbancare la 24 ore di Le Mans per quattro anni consecutivi perseguendo l’obiettivo di battere la Ferrari. E’ un libro molto dettagliato e ricco di splendide fotografie. Scritto in inglese.
