The Surtees TS9/005 debuted with John Surtees in 1971 at the Italian Grand Prix on September 5th. The water radiators, located on the sides of the monocoque and ducted in short tunnels, created overheating problems even during testing. Surtees' race ended on the third lap with a broken engine. After Monza, the TS9/005 was taken to the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen on October 31st, the final race of the World Championship, where, again with Surtees at the wheel, it finished seventeenth. For 1972, the car was developed under the designation TS9B and entrusted to former motorcycle World Champion Mike Hailwood starting from the second race of the season, the South African Grand Prix on March 4th at Kyalami. Hailwood qualified fourth at Kyalami and threatened Stewart's lead during the race when he had to retire on lap 29 with a broken suspension. The Englishman achieved the fastest lap of the race. At the Race of Champions on March 19 at Brands Hatch, a non-World Championship race, Hailwood drove the TS9B/005 to the second step of the podium. At the Italian Grand Prix on September 10 at Monza, Hailwood was ninth in qualifying and finished second in the race, achieving what would be the best result for the Surtees TS9B/005 and the best result overall for a Surtees in a World Championship race. At the end of the season, the Surtees team finished fifth in the Constructors' Championship and Hailwood was eighth in the Drivers' Championship. In 1973, the TS9B/005 was entered only in the Brazilian Grand Prix, with local driver Luiz Pereira Bueno at the wheel, who finished twelfth.

La Surtees TS9/005 debuttò con John Surtees nel 1971 al Gran Premio d’Italia del 5 settembre. I radiatori dell'acqua, posti ai lati della monoscocca e intubati in corti tunnel, crearono già in prova problemi di surriscaldamento. La gara per Surtees terminò al terzo giro con il motore rotto. Dopo Monza la TS9/005 fu portata al Gran Premio degli Stati Uniti del 31 ottobre a Watkins Glen, ultima gara del Mondiale dove, sempre con Surtees al volante, giunse al traguardo in diciassettesima posizione. Per il 1972 la monoposto fu sviluppata prendendo la denominazione TS9B e fu affidata all’ex Campione del Mondo di motociclismo Mike Hailwood a partire dalla seconda gara della stagione, il Gran Premio del Sudafrica del 4 marzo a Kyalami. Hailwood a Kyalami si qualificò in quarta posizione e in gara arrivò ad insidiare la prima posizione di Stewart quando al ventinovesimo giro si dovette fermare con una sospensione rotta. L'inglese ottenne il giro più veloce in gara. Alla Race of Champions del 19 marzo a Brands Hatch, gara non valida per il Mondiale, Hailwood portò la TS9B/005 sul secondo gradino del podio. Al Gran Premio d'Italia del 10 settembre a Monza Hailwood fu nono in prova e in gara finì secondo ottenendo quello che sarà il miglior risultato per la Surtees TS9B/005 e in generale il miglior risultato per una Surtees in una gara di Campionato Mondiale. A fine stagione la scuderia Surtees terminò quinta nella classifica Costruttori e Hailwood fu ottavo in quella piloti. Nel 1973 la TS9B/005 fu iscritta solo al Gran Premio del Brasile con al volante il pilota locale Luiz Pereira Bueno che concluse la corsa al dodicesimo posto.

The 1970s were one of the most prolific periods in the history of the technical and aerodynamic evolution of Formula 1. Experimentation and development were intense and carried on with laps of track, when computers and the wind tunnel were just starting to be used. It was a period of brilliant ideas or just imaginative if not sometimes catastrophic intuitions that came from designers of absolute value. With this volume I have tried to describe this period through the images of 22 Formula 1 cars, that it raced between 1970 and 1975. All the images were taken by me in the pits of the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza during various editions of the “Coppa Intereuropa” for historic cars that in its best moments, it was an unmissable event because it gave fans the opportunity to relive the charm of the races of the past and to observe closely and on the track the cars, both Formula and Prototype, Sport or GT, protagonists of the glorious past.

Gli anni 70 furono un periodo tra i più prolifici nella storia dell’evoluzione tecnica e aerodinamica della Formula 1. La sperimentazione e lo sviluppo erano intensi e portati avanti a suon di giri di pista, quando computer e galleria del vento cominciavano appena ad essere utilizzati. Era un periodo di idee geniali o solo intuizioni fantasiose se non a volte catastrofiche che scaturivano da progettisti di assoluto valore. Con questo volume ho cercato di raccontare questo periodo attraverso le immagini di 22 Formula 1 che corsero tra il 1970 e il 1975. Tutte le immagini sono state scattate da me ai box dell’Autodromo Nazionale di Monza durante varie edizioni della Coppa Intereuropa per auto storiche che nei suoi migliori momenti, è stata una manifestazione irrinunciabile perché dava agli appassionati la possibilità di rivivere il fascino delle corse di un tempo e di osservare da vicino e in pista le vetture, sia Formula che Prototipo, Sport o GT, protagoniste di un passato glorioso.
