After the successes achieved in 1969 with the Surtees TS5-Chevrolet (car designed by Len Terry as Terrier Mark 15 and initially planned for Roger Nathan) in the US Formula A championship, which later became F.5000, with David Hoobs and in the European F.5000 Championship with Trevor Taylor, John Surtees embarked on the road to Formula 1 as a manufacturer designing, in collaboration with Peter Connew the Surtees TS7, equipped with the classic Ford Cosworth DFV.
However, the F.5000 was not abandoned. Considering that the Championships of this formula, in Europe, in Australia and in the United States (Formula A had been renamed Formula 5000) were enjoying considerable success, the possibility of building and selling several cars, as had happened with the TS5 and TS5A was concrete and in 1971 saw the light the Chevrolet-powered Surtees TS8. The sale of Formula 5000 cars was needed by Team Surtees to finance the Formula 1 program. The design of the monocoque was that of the TS7, already well-made and with slight modifications necessary for the installation of the powerful 5-liter Chevrolet V8 as a stressed member, fueled by carburetors. The gearbox was the Hewland DG300 and also the suspensions were the same as the TS7, the front ones with inboard coil springs over dampers controlled by a massive rocker and the rear ones with lower quadrilateral, upper linkage and single radial rod. The installation of the engine had led to a slight increase in wheelbase compared to TS7.
Surtees' constructive philosophy was that of small steps and the constant improvement and development of consolidated ideas, the same concept as Ron Tauranac and exactly the opposite of Colin Chapman.

The Surtees TS8 was immediately a winning car. Mike Hailwood participated in the "Rothmans European Formula 5000 Championship" in 1971 with the Team Surtees' works car and Alan Rollinson with an Alan McKechnie Team' TS8 and ended the championship respectively in second and fourth place overall. The debut of the TS8 took place on March 28, 1971 at Mallory Park where Hailwood obtained the pole position and peremptorily won both heats of 25 laps each. During the season Hailwood scored a total of 4 victories and Rollinson two, including that of Monza on June 20. In the United States the TS8 was driven by Sam Posey for Team Champ Carr Inc. of Doug Champlin and Fred Carillo in the "L&M Continental 5000 Championship" which the American driver finished in second place overall with two victories.
The chassis #006 that now belongs to Carlo Maria Del Conte, was the one used by Sam Posey at the Questor Grand Prix in Ontario on March 28, 1971, the Formula 1 and Formula 5000 mixed non-championship race. Called the "richest race in the world" by way of of his prize pool, at the competition held on the Ontario Motor Speedway on two heats of 32 laps each (the F.5000 with their tanks could only cover 32 laps before they ran dry) took part several Formula 1 drivers with their cars normally engaged in the World Championship in addition to the local 5000 Formula. Sam Posey with the Surtees TS8 chassis # 006 qualified in fourteenth place, third fastest time among the F.5000 behind Donohue and Follmer, easily entering the Formula 1 group. In the race Posey finished in 21st place after retiring in the first heat due to engine overheating. The final victory went to Mario Andretti with the Ferrari 312B.

Here are three very interesting and very useful books for those who want to delve into the fantastic and little-known world of Formula 5000. Born in 1968 in the United States as Formula A, exported in Europe, in Australia and New Zealand these "cheap Formula 1" with engines of maximum displacement of 5 liters and crankcase derived from mass production were the protagonists of memorable races in particular in the first half of the 70's. Generally equipped with powerful V8 with lots of torque and fueled by carburetors or injection these fast and demanding single-seaters were driven by iconic and brave drivers like Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter, Brian Redman, Peter Gethin, Brett Lunger, David Hoobs just to name a few. These books cover every race held in Europe, United States, Australia and New Zealand from 1968 to 1979, accompanied by the rankings of each race and championship and some black and white photos. For those interested, they are history books not to be missed.
