Theodore TR1 chassis #1 - 1978
After participating in the 1977 Formula 1 World Championship with an Ensign N177 driven by Patrick Tambay, Teddy Yip wanted to become a builder and turned to Ron Tauranac for the project. Two cars were built, the Theodore TR1-1 and the Theodore TR1-2 that stood out for the shape of the nose-cone. The TR1-1, differently to the second car built had a small air intake for the oil radiator which was hidden by a conveyor.

The TR1-1 was used by the American driver Eddie Cheever, hired by Teddy Hip for the first two Grand Prixes of the 1978 season, in Argentina and in Brazil. In both Cheever, Formula 1 debutant failed to qualify. In Argentina, some engine failures did not allow the American driver to make a sufficient number of laps to be able to fine-tune the car, also at its debut. Eventually Cheever achieved the twenty-seventh time, better only than that of the English female-driver Divina Galica with the Hesketh 308E.
At the Brazilian Grand Prix in Jacarepagua, things did not turn out better because at the beginning of Saturday's last qualifying round, a suspension broke, depriving Eddie Cheveer of any chance of trying to qualify. At the end of the practices with the twenty-sixth time Cheever was excluded from the starting grid for only eight hundredths of a second. Realizing the car's lack of competitiveness the American found an agreement with Hesketh Team taking the place to Divina Galica for the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami where with the 308E he managed to qualify with the twenty-third time and retired on the eighth lap for the engine failure. Eddie Cheever's place was taken by Keke Rosberg who was also a Formula 1 debutant. During the tests on February 25th at Kyalami, the week before the Grand Prix, Rosberg, that was surprising everyone with amazing times, he put an end to the competitive career of the TR1- 1 flying off the track at the Sunset bend and heavily damaging the car that was no longer used. For the South African Grand Prix a new car was set up, the TR1-2 that Keke Rosberg managed to qualify with the twenty-third time (faster than Cheever) but was forced to stop on lap 14 due to a fuel leak in the cockpit. Now the Theodore TR1-1 which was first brought to the track by Derek Daly, which Eddie Cheever tried to qualify and which Keke Rosberg destroyed, was reborn, wonderfully rebuilt by a team of high-level Italian specialists, Pollini, Fumagalli and Gottardi and finally we’ll see the car again on the track. |
