Chevron B16 - 1969-70

In 1969 Derek Bennett, encouraged by the commercial and sporting success of the Chevron B8, decided to undertake the construction and development of a prototype that would replace the B8 to compete in the European 2-litre Sportscar Championship. The Chevron B16 was built with a square-section tube frame reinforced with aluminium and steel panels and was completed by two tube sub-frames, one at front-end to support the suspensions and one at rear-end to support the engine. These two sub-frames could be removed and easily repaired.

Nel 1969 Derek Bennett, incoraggiato dal successo commerciale e sportivo della Chevron B8, decise di intraprendere la costruzione e lo sviluppo di un prototipo che sostituisse la B8 per competere nel campionato europeo sport 2 litri. La Chevron B16 venne realizzata con un telaio in tubi a sezione quadrata rinforzato da pannelli in alluminio e acciaio ed era completato da due telai in tubi, uno anteriore per supportare le sospensioni e uno posteriore con il compito di sostenere il motore. Questi due telai potevano essere rimossi e facilmente riparati.

The suspensions adopted a traditional scheme, the front ones consisted of double wishbones, springs and coaxial shock absorbers while the rear ones consisted of a lower wishbone, upper link rod, two radial rods, springs and coaxial shock absorbers. Both in front and rear, stabilizer bars were present

Le sospensioni adottavano uno schema tradizionale, quelle anteriori erano composte da doppi triangoli, molle e ammortizzatori coassiali mentre quelle posteriori erano composte da un triangolo inferiore, bielletta superiore, due puntoni di reazione, molle e ammortizzatori coassiali. Sia all’anteriore che al posteriore erano presenti le barre stabilizzatrici.

The body was made by fiberglass, with a very accurate aerodynamics, designed by Derek Bennett himself and developed by the stylist Jim Clark of the Specialized Molding Company, to which the B16 bodies were commissioned. The result was a beautiful coupe, very low, streamlined and much faster than the previous B8.
According to official numbers, 23 models were built of the Chevron B16, 18 of them equipped with a 1.8-litre Ford Cosworth FVC engine, 2 units equipped with a 1.6-litre Ford Cosworth FVA engine, 2 with the BMW M10 2-litre engine and 1 with the Mazda rotary Wankel engine. The gearbox was a Hewland FT200 five-speed manual. The car with the Ford FVC engine was homologated as GT Group 5, for which the minimum number of units to be built was 25.

La carrozzeria era in fibra di vetro, dall’aerodinamica molto curata, disegnata dallo stesso Derek Bennett e sviluppata dallo stilista Jim Clark della Specialised Moulding Company alla quale vennero poi commissionate le carrozzerie delle B16. Il risultato fu un bellissimo coupè, molto basso, filante e molto più veloce della precedente B8. In base alle cifre ufficiali, del modello Chevron B16 furono costruiti 23 esemplari, 18 dei quali dotati di motore Ford Cosworth FVC da 1,8 litri, 2 esemplari dotati di motore Ford Cosworth FVA da 1,6 litri, 2 con il BMW M10 da 2 litri e 1 con il motore Mazda rotativo Wankel. Il cambio era di tipo manuale Hewland FT200 a cinque marce. La vettura con il motore Ford FVC, fu omologata come GT gruppo 5, per la quale il numero di esemplari minimo da costruire era 25.

 The debut took place at the 1969 Nürburgring 500Km, with a car equipped with the Ford Cosworth FVA 1.6 liter and driven by Brian Redman who scored the overall victory. Great credit for the victory went to Brian Redman who mastered the handling problems of the new car with mastery. The problems were later solved by applying two spoilers on the sides of the engine cover.
In 1970 the works Chevron Team, aimed at the European 2 litre sports title, competing with Brian Redman, John Burton and Vic Elford who won the Nürburgring 500 km. The championship was resolved only at the last race at Spa Francorchamps that awarded the drivers title to Jo Bonnier with the Lola T210 with a one-point lead over the works Chevron driver Brian Redman while the constructors title was won by Chevron, thanks also to the introduction of the B16 Spyder model, precursor of the future B19.

Il debutto avvenne alla 500 km del Nürburgring del 1969, con una vettura dotata del Ford Cosworth FVA da 1.6 litri e con al volante Brian Redman che ottenne la vittoria assoluta. Gran merito della vittoria andò a Brian Redman che sopperì con maestria ai problemi di maneggevolezza della nuova vettura. I problemi furono in seguito risolti applicando due spoiler ai lati del cofano motore.
Nel 1970 il Team ufficiale Chevron, puntò al titolo europeo sport 2 litri, gareggiando con Brian Redman, John Burton e Vic Elford il quale si aggiudicò la 500 km del Nürburgring. Il campionato si risolse solo all’ultima gara a Spa Francorchamps che assegnò il titolo piloti a Jo Bonnier con la Lola T210 con un vantaggio di un solo punto sul pilota ufficiale Chevron Brian Redman mentre il titolo marche se lo aggiudicò la Chevron grazie anche all’introduzione del modello B16 Spyder, precursore della futura B19.

Chassis was built by Vin Malkie in 1999 on DBE 026 identity and remaining parts. There are currently many Chevron B16 cars authorized to race as historic cars but many are new cars, built in the 80's with chassis numbers of original models, or rebuilt on the basis of original models. Even today you can buy a Chevron B16 built with the specifications of the era ... new! In the multitude of existing cars, it becomes difficult to identify the truly original cars.

 La Chevron B16 DBE 26 è stata costruita nel 1999 da Vin Malkie utilizzando le parti dello chassis DBE 26  originale. Attualmente esistono molte Chevron B16 autorizzate a gareggiare come auto storiche ma moltissime sono vetture nuove, costruite negli anni ottanta con numeri di telaio di modelli originali, o ricostruite sulla base di vetture originali. Ancora oggi è possibile acquistare una Chevron B16 costruita con le specifiche dell’epoca… nuova! Nella moltitudine di vetture esistenti, diventa difficile individuare le vetture veramente originali.

The Chevron B16 BMW DBE-06 was purchased by the Worcestershire Racing Association for John Burton in 1970. It achieved excellent results both in the 2-litre European Sportscar Championship in 1970 and in the RAC Sportscar Championship. In 1970 and 1971 he ran the 1000Km of Brands Hatch of the World Championship for Makes.

La Chevron B16 BMW DBE-06 fu acquistato dalla Worcestershire Racing Association per John Burton nel 1970. Ottenne ottimi risultati sia nelle gare del Campionato Europeo Sport 2 litri nel 1970 che nel Campionato Sport RAC. Nel 1970 e 1971 corse la 1000Km di Brands Hatch del Campionato Mondiale Marche.
