The Jaguar XJR-14 chassis #591 is the first of the three Jaguar XJR-14s built by TWR, Tom Walkinshaw Racing for the 1991 World Sports Car Championship and is the only one of the three built cars preserved in the conditions that ran of that time. The car was designed by Ross Brown, the chassis consisted of a monocoque in aluminium honeycomb panels covered with carbon fibre, suspensions had a push-rod scheme with double triangles with adjustable anti-roll bars, the braking system was equipped with carbon disks and also the highly sophisticated aerodynamic bodywork was made in carbon fibre. The cockpit had small dimensions and the engine, the 3.5 liter Cosworth HB V8 was the same used in Formula 1 in the same period.
Chassis #591 had a successful career start. The debut took place at Silverstone at the end of March 1991 and began the season, with drivers Derek Warwick and Martin Brundle, on April 14 in Suzuka where they scored the pole. The drivers failed to finish the race due to an engine failure. In the second race at Monza they still scored the pole and gained the victory. At Silverstone for the third race, Brundle after breaking the throttle cable and losing 6 laps, came third driving alone. The Jaguar XJR-14 # 591 was brought to Le Mans for 24 Hours but the team preferred using the most reliable XJR-12 with the V12 engine. During the rest of the World Sports Car Championship races, the chassis #591 was used as a T-car. The following year, 1992, the XJR-14 took part at the Laguna Seca 2 hours of the IMSA GTP Championship, taking fourth place with Arie Luyendyk driving. |
La Jaguar XJR-14 chassis 591, è la prima delle tre Jaguar XJR-14 costruite dalla TWR, Tom Walkinshaw Racing per il World Sports Car Championship del 1991 ed è l’unica delle tre costruite rimasta nelle condizioni in cui corse all’epoca. La vettura fu progettata da Ross Brown, lo chassis era costituito da una monoscocca in pannelli di honeycomb di alluminio rivestiti con fibra di carbonio, le sospensioni avevano uno schema push-rod con doppi triangoli sovrapposti con barre antirollio regolabili, l'impianto frenante era equipaggiato da dischi in carbonio e in carbonio era pure la carrozzeria dall’aerodinamica molto sofisticata. L'abitacolo aveva dimensioni contenute e il motore, il Cosworth HB V8 da 3,5 litri era lo stesso impiegato sulle Formula 1 dello stesso periodo.
Il telaio 591 ha avuto un inizio di carriera di successo. Il debutto in pista avvenne a Silverstone, alla fine di marzo del 1991, e iniziò la stagione affidata ai piloti Derek Warwick e Martin Brundle il 14 Aprile a Suzuka dove partirono dalla pole. L’equipaggio non riuscì a finire la gara a causa di un guasto al motore. Nella seconda gara a Monza partirono ancora dalla pole e ottennero la vittoria. A Silverstone per la terza gara Brundle, dopo aver rotto il cavo dell’acceleratore ed aver perso 6 giri, arrivò terzo guidando da solo. La Jaguar XJR-14 #591 fu portata a Le Mans per la 24 Ore ma la squadra preferì usare la più affidabile XJR-12 col motore V12. Durante le restanti gare del World Sports Car Championship, lo chassis 591 fu utilizzato come T-car. L’anno seguente, il 1992 la XJR-14 prese parte alla 2 ore di Laguna Seca del campionato IMSA GTP, cogliendo il quarto posto con alla guida Arie Luyendyk. |

Nice book, full of very useful information for those who want to deepen their knowledge on the technical and historical aspects related to this type of cars. The themes of aerodynamics and its development over the years until the advent of the ground effect, the construction techniques of the frames, including those in composite materials, suspensions, brakes and transmissions, are explained in great detail. The part relating to the engines is also very interesting. The text is written in English, is very fluent and is accompanied by several photographs, all in black and white. It is definitely recommended for all fans, especially those of historic cars.

Bel libro, ricco di informazioni molto utili per che vuole approfondire la conoscenza sugli aspetti tecnici e storici legati a questo tipo di vetture. I temi dell’aerodinamica e il suo sviluppo negli anni fino all’avvento dell’effetto suolo, le tecniche di costruzione dei telai, compresi quelli in materiali compositi, di sospensioni, freni e trasmissioni, sono spiegati in modo molto dettagliato. Molto interessante anche la parte relativa ai propulsori. Il testo è scritto in inglese, è molto scorrevole ed è corredato da parecchie fotografie, tutte in bianco e nero. E’ un libro sicuramente consigliato a tutti gli appassionati, in particolare di auto storiche.
