The Jaguar XJR-8 was a car designed by Tony Southgate in 1987, destined for the World Sports Prototype Championship. The car was built in Kidlington by Tom Walkinshaw's TWR Jaguar Team in three specimens and derived directly from the XJR-6 used in 1986 and also designed by Southgate. The chassis of the XJR-8 was the same as the XJR-6 and was a monocoque made by Advanced Composites entirely made of composite material, using carbon fibre skin over Nomex honeycomb. The result was a structure weighing just over 50 kg but extremely rigid and very resistant to torsion. The body was also made of carbon fibre reinforced with Kevlar. The engine was the naturally aspirated 7-liter V12, with cast iron crankcase and aluminium heads with 2 valves per cylinder, capable of developing 720 hp.
The 1987 season was a triumphal one for the TWR Jaguar Team. For the first time since 1982, a car manufacturer was able to counter the dominance imposed by the Porsche 965/962 and their turbo 6-cylinder boxer engine, with a car equipped with a naturally aspirated engine. The XJR-8 won 8 of the 11 races it entered in 1987, 10 of which were valid for the World Sports Prototype Championship. Brazilian driver Raul Boesel won the World Drivers' Championship and Jaguar drivers Jan Lammers, John Watson and Eddie Cheever took second, third and fourth places in the standings. The TWR Jaguar Team won the World Teams Championship. The only downside of the season was the 24 Hours of Le Mans where three cars were entered, two of which were the XJR-6, chassis 186 and 286. Of the three entered cars, only the XJR-8 of the crew consisting of Raul Boesel, Eddie Cheever and Jan Lammers they managed to finish the competition by finishing in 5th place. Thanks to the strength of the monocoque designed by Southgate, Win Percy emerged unharmed from the wreckage of his XJR-8 chassis number 286, after a terrifying accident caused by a tire failure.
