In 1982 the FIA introduced a new rules called "Group C" for the World Sports Prototype Championship to replace the now obsolete Groups 5 and 6. The new regulation foresaw restrictions on fuel consumption, and on size and weight of the cars, while the engines displacement and the number of cars to be built to obtain the homologation were free. Two classes of prototypes were created: Class C and Class C Junior, which later became C1 and C2. The first class was dedicated to the great builders while the second was designed for private teams and small builders. To compete in the World Championships in the Group C Sports Prototype, Porsche built the 956. The car designed by the team of Norbert Singer, was assembled around the first aluminium monocoque made by Porsche for a race car, replacing the classic tubes frame used until then. The engine was the classic 6-cylinder boxer of 2649 cc supercharged with two KKK turbochargers capable, in the race set-up to develop 630 hp, with water cooling for cylinder heads and air for cylinders and crankcase. In 1983 the 956 was also made available to customers and in 1984 the version 956 B was introduced that through a different electronic control unit could develop up to 640 hp. The aerodynamics were very accurate, the car was equipped with Venturi tunnels for the ground effect and an effective extractor. There were 2 different configurations that provided a rear wing arranged in a standard position and a rear wing in a lowered position for fast circuits. To change from one configuration to another, it was sufficient to replace the bonnet.

The debut took place with a single car at the Silverstone 1000 Km in 1982 in the hands of Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell where they finished second. Silverstone was the second race of the World Championship (the first was the Monza 1000 Km). The second race was the 24 Hours of Le Mans where the three official Porsche 956 ended first with Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell, second with Jochen Mass and Vern Schuppan and third with Hurley Haywood, Al Holbert and Jürgen Barth. The Porsche 956, conquered the 24 Hours of Le Mans also in 1983, 1984 and 1985 and won the Sports Prototypes World Championships in 1982, 1983, and 1984. In 1985 it was introduced in Europe (in the United States it was in 1984) the Porsche 962.

The car in the photos is the 956B-118. The chassis 118 was the last in the 956 series to have been sold to customers. It was produced in 1984 and delivered to Nova Engineering in Japan to replace the frame 108 which was destroyed in a fire during the Fuji 500 km on 3 June 1984. The Porsche 956B-118 was used exclusively in Japan by the Team Trust and driven by the Australian Vern Schuppan, from Japanese Yoshimi Katayama and Keiichi Suzuki and by Hans-Joachim Stuck. During the 500 km of the Fuji of 1985 the car was damaged again by a fire which ended the sports career.
