The DN5 was the third Shadow Formula 1 car built after the DN1 and DN3 models. It was designed, as well as the previous ones, by Tony Southgate for the 1975 season. The very slim and stylish line recalls previous Southgate's projects. The chassis was an aluminium tub, low and squared with the cockpit slightly more advanced than the previous DN3 version. The water radiators were positioned on the sides of the cockpit, in a very backward position in the conveyor tunnels and the oil radiator was placed in the long and thin nose. Completely redesigned to the front suspension, with shock absorbers sloping inside the chassis driven by massive upper rocker arms while the rear suspension remained basically unchanged.

Featuring the classic Ford Cosworth DFV and the Hewland TL200 gearbox, it was a surprise to the beginning of the 1975 season when Jean-Pierre Jarier scored the pole position in the first two Grand Prix in Argentina and Brazil.

In Argentina, Jarier was forced to retire before the start as a result of the gearbox locked. In Argentina he was still forced to stop at seven laps from the end while he was firmly in first position due to the injection system failure but still scored the fastest lap of the race.

Tom Pryce won the Race of Champions on March 16 at Brands Hatch, a non-championship race and on July 19 he scored the pole position at the England Grand Prix at Silverstone but was forced to retire while struggling for victory because he went off the track due to the strong shower.

Overall the Shadow DN5 can be considered the most competitive car ever built by the anglo-american team, always very fast in practice but lack of reliability and some unlucky episode limited its results and at the end of the season was ranked sixth in the makers rankings.

The car in the photos, chassis # 2A, is what Tom Pryce took to victory in the Race of Champions in Brands Hatch and with which he scored the third place at the Austrian Grand Prix at Zeltweg.
