This is the car that in addition to being the only Shadow to have achieved a victory in a World Championship Formula 1 Grand Prix, is inextricably linked to the tragedy of Tom Pryce. The Shadow DN8 was designed by Tony Southgate in collaboration with Dave Wass for the 1976 Formula 1 season. The Team had big financial problems so the new car was ready in one model only at the end of the season, forcing the drivers to compete with the old DN5. The debut took place at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort in 1976 with Tom Pryce who after qualifying in third position came fourth to the finish line. The DN8 was a clear development of the previous models DN1, DN3 and DN5, had a very low and narrow chassis in the front, with the suspension of classic setting with lower wishbone and upper rocker to operate the shock absorber inside the chassis. Also at the rear suspensions were traditional and the brake discs were positioned inboard at the sides of the gearbox. The general approach was set up to have a concentration of the weights towards the rear, the radiators were installed on the sides of the engine and the large rear wing was supported by a central pylon consisting of two perforated struts for adjustments. The engine was the classic Ford Cosworth DFV stressed mounted and the usual Hewland gearbox. The second car built, the DN8 2A, was ready for the debut at the South African Grand Prix in 1977 at Kyalami, where Tom Pryce qualified with the 15th time. On lap 23, two marshals crossed the track immediately after the corner that leads onto the pits straight to provide assistance to Renzo Zorzi Pryce's team-mate whose car stopped on the left side, due to the failure of the engine and a start of fire. Tom Pryce who arrived at that moment invested one of the two marshals killing him, the fire extinguisher that the marshal had in his hand hit Pryce on the helmet killing him instantly. The Shadow with Pryce stiffened on board continued his run along the straight in about 600 meters to the entrance of the Crowthorne bend where without control violently hit against Jacques Laffite's Ligier. Tom Pryce was replaced by Alan Jones and the season went on to be the best ever from a sporting point of view, in fact Jones got the first and only victory of the Team at the Austrian Grand Prix at Zeltweg and he came third at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza . The Shadow DN8 is also the car with which Riccardo Patrese made his debut at the Montecarlo Grand Prix, again in 1977. At the end of the season the Shadow Team was placed in 7th place in the world rankings with 23 points.
The DN8 was also used at the beginning of the 1978 season while waiting for the DN9. During the seasons 1976, 1977 and 1978 the car has been driven by Tom Pryce, Renzo Zorzi, Jean Pierre Jarier, Jacky Oliver, Alan Jones, Arturo Merzario, Riccardo Patrese, Clay Regazzoni.

Questa è la vettura che oltre ad essere stata l’unica Shadow ad aver conseguito una vittoria in un Gran Premio titolato di Formula 1, è indissolubilmente legata alla tragedia di Tom Pryce. La Shadow DN8, fu progettata da Tony Southgate in collaborazione con Dave Wass per la stagione di Formula 1 1976. Il Team aveva grossi problemi finanziari così la nuova vettura fu pronta in un esemplare solo alla fine della stagione costringendo i piloti a gareggiare con la vecchia DN5. Il debutto avvenne al Gran Premio d’Olanda a Zandvoort nel 1976 con Tom Pryce che dopo essersi qualificato in terza posizione giunse quarto al traguardo. La DN8 era un evidente sviluppo dei precedenti modelli DN1, DN3 e DN5, aveva un telaio molto basso e stretto nella parte anteriore con le sospensioni di impostazione classica con triangolo inferiore e bilanciere superiore che comandava l’ammortizzatore interno alla scocca. Anche al posteriore le sospensioni erano tradizionali e i dischi freno erano posizionati ai lati del cambio. L’impostazione generale prevedeva una concentrazione dei pesi verso la parte posteriore, i radiatori erano installati ai lati del motore e il grande alettone posteriore era supportato da un pilone centrale formato da due supporti forati per le regolazioni. Il motore era il classico Ford Cosworth DFV montato con funzione portante e il cambio il solito Hewland. La seconda vettura costruita, la DN8 2A, fu pronta per il debutto al Gran Premio del Sud Africa del 1977 a Kyalami, dove Tom Pryce si qualificò con il 15° tempo. Al 23° giro due commissari attraversarono la pista subito dopo la curva che immette sul rettilineo dei box per prestare soccorso a Renzo Zorzi compagno di squadra di Pryce la cui vettura ferma sul lato sinistro a causa del cedimento del propulsore aveva sviluppato un principio d’incendio. Tom Pryce che sopraggiungeva in quell’istante investì uno dei due commissari uccidendolo, l’estintore che il commissario aveva in mano colpì sul casco Pryce che rimase ucciso a sua volta istantaneamente. La Shadow con Pryce irrigidito a bordo proseguì la sua corsa lungo il rettilineo per otre 600 metri fino all’ingresso della curva Crowthorne dove senza più controllo urtò violentemente contro la Ligier di Jacques Laffite. Tom Pryce fu sostituito da Alan Jones e la stagione proseguì risultando la migliore in assoluto dal punto di vista sportivo infatti Jones ottenne la prima ed unica vittoria del Team al Gran Premio d’Austria a Zeltweg e giunse terzo al Gran Premio d’Italia a Monza. La Shadow DN8 è anche la vettura con la quale debuttò Riccardo Patrese al Gran Premio di Montecarlo, sempre nel 1977. Alla fine della stagione il Team Shadow si piazzò al 7° posto della classifica mondiale con 23 punti.
La DN8 venne utilizzata anche all’inizio della stagione 1978 in attesa della DN9. Nel corso delle stagioni 1976, 1977 e 1978 fu pilotata da Tom Pryce, Renzo Zorzi, Jean Pierre Jarier, Jacky Oliver, Alan Jones, Arturo Merzario, Riccardo Patrese, Clay Regazzoni.

This is the reconstruction of the second built car that tragically debuted with Tom Pryce at the Grand Prix of South Africa in 1977.

Shadow DN8 #6A - 1977

The DN8 6A was the last built and debuted in October 1977 at the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen with Jean Pierre Jarier. The French qualified 16th and finished the Grand Prix in ninth place. The second and last Grand Prix was in Canada at Mosport with Riccardo Patrese at the wheel who after qualifying in eighth place concluded tenth. Afterwards the DN8 6A chassis was used as the basis for a Can-Am car, the DN10 which, equipped with a Dodge engine, participated in the 1978 Can-Am Challenge with Jean-Pierre Jarier and only recently has it been restored to its original configuration .

La DN8 6A fu l’ultima costruita e debuttò nell’ottobre del 1977 al Gran Premio degli Stati Uniti a Watkins Glen con Jean Pierre Jarier. Il francese si qualificò 16° e finì il Gran Premio al nono posto. Il secondo e ultimo Gran Premio fu quello del Canada a Mosport con al volante Riccardo Patrese che dopo essersi qualificato all’ottavo posto, concluse decimo. In seguito il telaio DN8 6A fu utilizzato come base per una vettura Can-Am, la DN10 che, equipaggiata con un motore Dodge partecipò allo Challenge Can-Am del 1978 con Jean-Pierre Jarier e solo di recente è stato riportato alla sua configurazione originale.
