In 1966 Carlo Abarth decided to build a small series of sports cars for customers. The designer, Mario Colucci designed the car based on a reticular tubular frame with a rear-middle positioned engine. Being destined for private drivers, the basic requirement of the car was ease of management and simplicity of driving but another fundamental requirement for Carlo Abarth was the low cost of realization. The Abarth 1000 SP shape was very beautiful and aerodynamically efficient. The nose was low thanks to the position of the radiators, placed immediately before the rear wheels and two large air intakes obtained at the height of the rear fenders provided for their cooling. The engine was the 982 cc. four-cylinders, with double cam shaft derived from the FIAT 600 engine, equipped with a dry sump and powered by two 40 mm Weber dual carburetor body. With a compression ratio of 10: 1 it was able to develop over 100 HP and push the small sport, weighing only 480 kg to over 220 km / h.
The debut took place on May 1, 1966 in a minor competition and four months later, at the Nurburgring 500 Km on September 4, Hans Hermann took the small two-seater to third place overall and to the victory in his class. Until the beginning of 1968, the Abarth 1000 SP ran in the prototype class but once it reached the 50 built specimens it was homologated in the sport group 6 class. From that moment it became the absolute protagonist of the national competitions, European Hillclimb Championship and World Championship for Makes with drivers of the level of Peter Schetty, Johannes Ortner, Leo Cella, Paolo Lado, Umberto Grano, Gianfranco Palazzoli "Pal-Joe", Walter Donà.
