Replacing the Lotus 72 with a new model was not at all easy for Team Lotus. The attempt made with the Lotus 76, JPS9 and JPS10 in 1974 did not succeed so well in fact, for the 1975 season Jacky Ickx and Ronnie Peterson used the no longer competitive 72, with disappointing results. In 1975 Colin Chapman, Geoff Aldridge and Martin Ogilvie designed the Lotus 77 in preparation for the 1976 Formula One season. Once again, Chapman produced an amazing car. The intent was to have a car that could best adapt to all tracks by changing set-up, wheel tracks and weight distribution according to the circuit and for this reason the Lotus 77 was nicknamed "the adjustcar". The monocoque, designed by Aldridge, was very narrow and weighed only 23 kg, the radiators were positioned in the sides and the suspensions both front and rear, designed by Ogilvie, had the attachment points on the double brake calipers and not directly on the monocoque. The brake calipers were anchored, by means of support frames, to the monocoque at the front and to the gearbox/differential casting at the rear. At the side view the car looked pleasant and extremely streamlined but seen from the front, the enormous masses of the outboard front brakes and dampers with co-axial springs ruined the slim and thin line. Three cars were built, the 77-1, the 77-2 and the 77-3 also called JPS11, JPS12 and JPS14.

Sostituire la Lotus 72 con un nuovo modello non fu affatto facile per il Team Lotus. Il tentativo fatto con la Lotus 76, JPS9 e JPS10 nel 1974 non riuscì bene tanto che per la stagione 1975 Jacky Ickx e Ronnie Peterson utilizzarono la ormai poco competitiva 72, con risultati deludenti. Nel 1975 Colin Chapman, Geoff Aldridge e Martin Ogilvie progettarono la Lotus 77 in vista della stagione di Formula 1 del 1976. Ancora una volta Chapman produsse una vettura sorprendente. L’intento era quello di avere una vettura che potesse adattarsi al meglio in tutte le piste modificando a seconda del circuito passo, careggiate e distribuzione dei pesi e per questo la Lotus 77 venne soprannominata “the adjustcar”. La monoscocca, progettata da Aldridge, era molto stretta e pesava solo 23 Kg, i radiatori erano posizionati nelle fiancate e le sospensioni sia anteriori che posteriori, progettate da Ogilvie, avevano i punti di attacco sulle doppie pinze dei freni e non direttamente sulla monoscocca. Le pinze dei freni a loro volta erano ancorate, tramite dei telai di supporto, alla monoscocca anteriormente e alla fusione della trasmissione posteriormente. Alla vista laterale la vettura appariva piacevole ed estremamente profilata ma vista da davanti, le enormi masse dei freni anteriori e degli ammortizzatori posizionati fuoribordo rovinavano la linea snella e sottile. Furono costruite tre vetture, la 77-1, la 77-2 e la 77-3 denominate anche JPS11, JPS12 e JPS14.

The drivers for 1976 were Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson and the season started with many difficulties. After the Brazilian Grand Prix, Ronnie Peterson left the team and was replaced by the Swedish Gunnar Nilsson. At the beginning of 1976 Tony Southgate joined the Team and during the year the Lotus 77 underwent radical transformations that involved the suspension, completely redesigned with the advice of Len Terry, the front brakes moved on the wheels, and the aerodynamics, with the oil cooler moved on the nose cone. Mario Andretti's hard work, which contributed significantly to the development of the car, was rewarded by the victory he obtained at the latest (very) wet Grand Prix of the season on the Fuji circuit in Japan. Meanwhile, the new fantastic Lotus 78 was ready for the 1977 season.

I piloti per il 1976 erano Mario Andretti e Ronnie Peterson e la stagione iniziò con molte difficoltà. Dopo il Gran Premio del Brasile Ronnie Peterson lasciò la squadra e fu sostituito dallo svedese Gunnar Nilsson. All’inizio del 1976 Tony Southgate entrò a far parte del Team e nel corso dell’anno la Lotus 77 subì radicali trasformazioni che riguardarono le sospensioni, completamente riprogettate con la consulenza di Len Terry, i freni anteriori riportati sulle ruote, e l’aerodinamica, con il radiatore dell’olio spostato sul muso. Il duro lavoro di Mario Andretti che contribuì nettamente allo sviluppo della vettura fu ripagato dalla vittoria ottenuta all’ultimo bagnatissimo Gran Premio della stagione sul circuito di Fuji in Giappone. Intanto la nuova fantastica Lotus 78 era già pronta per la stagione 1977.
