Foto
The 1000 km of Monza in 2004 represented the debut race of the new championship, called Le Mans Endurance Series, promoted by the ACO (Automobile Club de l'Ouest) and organized by Patrick Peter's Peter Auto. The championship consisted of 4 races of 1000 km and was open to prototype and GT sports cars divided into 4 classes: LMP1, LMP2, LMGTS and LMGT. After two days of official tests, organized at Paul Ricard on 10 and 11 April, the championship started with the 1000 km of Monza followed by the 1000 km at Nürburgring on 4 July, the 1000 km of Silverstone on 13 August and the 1000 km of Spa-Francorchamps on September 12th. In addition to these races, the 24 Hours of Le Mans was scheduled for 12 and 13 June but was not valid for the championship. For the 4 races the points were assigned to the first 8 classified in the order of 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 points. The score was assigned to each single car entered and was not cumulative by team.

40 crews showed up at Monza, 13 cars in the LMP1 class, 4 in the LMP2 class, 7 in the LMGTS class and 16 in the LMGT.
In the LMP1 class, the Ingolstadt brand was represented by three Audi R8s, two managed by the English Audi Sport UK Team Veloqx, one for Johnny Herbert and Jaime Davies (chassis # 604) and the other for the Scotsman Allan McNish and the German Pierre Kaffer (chassis # 603). The third Audi R8 (chassis # 602) was entered by the Japanese Audi Sport Japan Team Goh, entrusted to Rinaldo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Seiji Ara. In 2004, Audi did not participate directly with the works team but entrusted its Audi R8s to private teams that were however followed by the company. The cars were the evolution of those used the previous year, updated according to new regulations which provided for a reduction in the width of the rear wing and an 80-liter tank, 10 litres smaller than in 2003. The R8 it had a monocoque chassis made by Dallara in carbon fibre and aluminium honeycomb panels and a 3.6-litre aluminium 90° V8 engine, supercharged by two Garrett turbochargers.

During the practices, the Audis were very fast but not so as to have no opponents. The Zytek 04S were very fearsome, especially the works car, managed by the Zytek Engineering Ltd team and driven by Andy Wallace, David Brabham and Stefan Johansson, who in fact had to give pole position to the Audi of Herbert-Davies in the last 45 minutes of practices on Saturday afternoon, for only 156 hundredths of a second. McNish-Kaffer's twin Audi finished third in the second row, and the Audi Sport Japan Team Goh car qualified in fifth place just over a second behind Herbert.
The British team Creation Autosportif, brought only one car to Monza, the Zytek-powered DBA 03S (chassis # 02S-01) for Nicolas Minassian and Jaime Campbell-Walter who were fourth in practice, alongside McNish's Audi in the second row.

The only Dome S101 present in Monza was that of the Japanese team Kondo Racing for Hiroki Katoh, Ryo Michigami and Hayanari Shimoda, also Japanese and qualified sixth, followed by the Rollcentre Racing team's Dallara LMP, entrusted to Martin Short, João Barbosa and Rob Barff, and the Courage C60 of Henri Pescarolo's team which was represented by a single car, for the French crew made up of Soheil Ayari and Emmanuel Collard. The Pescarolo Courage C60 had an evolved design from the original 2003 Courage C60. It was modified to comply with the new regulation and was equipped with the 5 litre V10 Judd engine in place of the supercharged V6 Peugeot ES9 J4S used in 2003.

Ninth place on the grid for the Nasamax DM139, entered by the English team of the same name for the South African Werner Lupberger and the Canadian Robbie Stirling. The Nasamax DM139 was a car based on the 2003 Reynard 2KQ-LM. The monocoque was built with carbon fibre and honeycomb aluminium and the aerodynamics were adapted to the new regulation. The engine, originally a supercharged 2.6-litre Ford Cosworth XDE, was replaced by the naturally aspirated 5-litre V10 Judd GV5 which, like the previous one, was powered by bioethanol, an ecological fuel obtained from the fermentation of sugar beets.
The second Zytek 04S present in Monza was that of Team Jota, driven by John Stack, Sam Hignett and Gianni Collini, who qualified eleventh.

The Lola was represented by a Lola B01/60 (MG EX257), chassis # 002 of Ray Mallock's team for the Brazilian Thomas Erdos, the English Mike Newton and the Portuguese Miguel Ramos, twelfths on the grid and two elderly Lola B2K/10B of the Taurus team, a Judd GV4 powered chassis (# HU05) for Benjamin Leuenberger, Alex Muller and Christian Vann, sixteenth at the start and the second, equipped with a brand new turbodiesel engine entrusted to Phil Andrews and Calum Lockie. Ian Dawson's Taurus team carried out the diesel engine project, built by Caterpillar with the help of the British engineering firm Mountune. The basis was the 5-litre Volkswagen Touareg V10 engine, suitably adapted for racing. The engine was installed on the Lola B2K/10B # HU01 chassis which was reinforced, as was the transmission. The car, which was very heavy and slow, qualified with the last time and remained stationary on the starting grid due to an oil leak.

At the start McNish took the lead followed by the twin Audi driven by Davies. In only two laps, Wallace with the very fast Zytek was close to McNish trying to overtake several times but a failure in the braking system immediately forced him to the pits where he remained stationary for 6 laps. The race continued with the Audi R8s clearly superior to the competition, which however battled throughout the race offering great spectacle, also thanks to the rain that began to fall abundantly thirty laps from the end.

The Monza 1000 Km. (1965-2008)
Foto
In this beautiful book signed by the automotive historian Aldo Zana, all the editions of the 1000 Km of Monza are described from 1965 to 2008. For each race, in addition to the detailed report, the starting grid and the final ranking are shown, all accompanied by magnificent archive photographs, very often unpublished. The book is written in Italian. It is a precious and unique book especially for those who, like me, have personally witnessed several of the races described. This book is highly recommended.
