Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, Monza 11 September 1977
The Grand Prix of Italy on September 11 was the 14th round of the 1977 Formula One World Championship. The organization sold 78,000 tickets, whose prices ranged from 30,000 lire for the main stand on Sunday to 3,500 lire for Friday's practice but the crowd exceeded 120,000 units.
The race was won by Mario Andretti who took the lead on the tenth lap, passing Jody Scheckter, who was subsequently forced to retire for engine breaks. Mario Andretti scored the 4th season victory in front of Niki Lauda, who with second place brought Scuderia Ferrari to win for the fifth time the Constructors Cup. Third ended Alan Jones who won the seventh and last podium for the Shadow. James Hunt was forced to retire a few laps after the start for a brake failure that caused a spin. McLaren entered the third car, the M23 / 8-2 for Bruno Giacomelli, who made his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship, but at lap 36 he was victim of a blow engine that flooded oil on the track at first chicane. Because of the oil left by Giacomelli Carlos Reutemann and Riccardo Patrese came out of the track and in the accident was involved a race commander who suffered a broken leg. Other debutants in this Grand Prix were Giorgio Francia and Lamberto Leoni, the first with the Brabham BT45, the second with a Surtees TS19. The Apollon, a Williams FW03 modified and managed by Jolly Club Switzerland, also began in the hands of Loris Kessel.
For the last time the BRM was present with the P206 entrusted to Teddy Pilette and also for the Boro, dived by Brian Henton was the last appearance. In the free practice of the previous days, the best time was scored by Jean-Pierre Jabouille on the Renault RS01 Turbo in 1'40 "4, a new unofficial record of the track. Great scare for Patrick Tambay during the Saturday's free practice when her Ensign ended on the guard-rail at second Lesmo corner, overturned and crawling on the roll-bar for several meters in an impressive sparking multitude. On the outline of the Grand Prize, the fourth and final round of the Trofeo Alfasud Europa took place. Two qualifying heats, every one of six laps and a 14-round finale, thrill the crowd. In the end, the first six places were occupied by six Italian drivers with the victory of Luigi Calamai.
